You know the song, “These are a few of my favorite things”? That is how I feel about pets and books. The old Lays commercial that said, “Bet you can’t eat just one” applies in this case too. Well, no, not really. Not that I eat books. Or pets. But I can’t have just one! You can never have too many books or pets. Well, okay, I guess you can. I may have crossed the line with both. Let’s not talk about it…Let’s talk about National Pet Month instead!
National Pet Month
Here in the United States, we celebrate National Pet Month in May. Our friends in the UK celebrate it in April. I think they just like to be first. National Pet Month’s purpose includes the following:
- Benefits of pet ownership
- Support pet adoption
- Make people aware of the benefits of pets for people and people for pets
- Increase public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals
- Raise awareness of the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals
I am all for this! I definitely am a firm believer in pet adoption. There are too many animals that need a forever home. Our county dog warden is always full of “throw away” dogs, especially pit bulls. These poor things are bred until they can’t be anymore, and then tossed aside. With all of these animals available, there is no need for you to go to a breeder. Adopt, don’t shop!
Here are two adorable books for you to share with your children and one dot-to-dot book for you to enjoy for yourself!

125 Pet Rescues, From Pound to Palace: Homeless Pets Made Happy
125 Pet Rescues is perfect for your 8-12 year old children, but you will enjoy it along with them! It is a collection of laugh-out-loud and heartwarming stories of animals in need who went on to become pampered pets. Just like the pit bulls featured on pages 16 & 17, though, don’t judge this book by its cover. The 125 vignettes of pets that have been rescued provides eye-opening insight into the power of compassion and kindness and the amazingly positive impact that rescuing a dog, cat, pig, horse or even a goat can have on the humans that open their hearts and their homes to them.
125 Pet Rescues has been created in cooperation with the Best Friends Animal Society whose mission is to bring about a time when there are no more homeless pets. Featuring a foreword by Best Friends CEO Gregory Castle and tips and advice from animal rescue experts, kids can learn how they can make a difference and become a rescue ambassador.
It is so important to teach our children how important it is for us to care for animals who can’t care for themselves. I love the tips for kids showing that they’re not too young to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals.
