Things to Consider Before You Bring Your Pug Puppy Home

Have you finally fulfilled your ultimate dream of bringing a pug puppy home? Pugs are a lovable breed, offer a playful sense of humor, and they’re wonderful companions for all ages. But while you may have puppy fever right now, there are a few things to keep in mind way before you bring your little bundle of pug love home. Here are just a few tips for getting a pug puppy.

Tips for Getting a Pug Puppy

Protecting Your Furniture

Did you just recently purchase brand new furniture? Or maybe you’re planning on it in the near future. One tip to remember with pugs and other puppies as well is that they love to chew and scratch. While your main goal may be to keep them off of or away from your furniture, it’s not always feasible.

Accidental messes and cuddling time can take precedence over trying to stick to the basic rules you once set. The easiest solution is to use towels and throws as much as possible to trap hair and little messes. Keep in mind that while pugs are short-haired dogs, they shed a lot of fur at different times throughout the year. For furniture with upholstery as well as leather, consider adding a protective barrier spray solution over the surface. This will help repel water and stains and reduce the risk of damage from soiling from a pet.

Controlling Messes And Odors

When a pug puppy jumps up on your furniture or leaves behind a stinky, wet surprise on your carpeting or hardwood flooring, cleaning up the mess as soon as possible obviously helps with staining. Depending on what your pug eats, his puppy messes could also leave permanent stains on certain finishes. Use this tip when you have a pug puppy:use an all-natural cleaner without harmful cleaning agents or deodorizers that could deteriorate or break away at carpet or furniture fibers. Clean up any debris and then use a light brush or microfiber cloth to slowly pat dry and bring up any liquids or solids to the surface.

Keeping It Legal

Something that you may not consider before you get a pug puppy is the fees it costs to have your dog licensed throughout the year. This starts with getting your dog a rabies shot and then taking the documentation to the correct offices in your city or township for legal filing. From there, your dog will get a valid dog license that will prevent you from being fined by the city in which you live. This is a must for anyone who legally wants to own a canine. Failure to do so could result in fines and prosecution that is punishable by law.

Don’t Forget The Vet Visits

While it may seem like your little puppy will live forever, happy and healthy, you need to make sure you keep him as healthy as can be. This starts with a good initial vet visit. The visit may include:

  • A well-exam that includes a complete physical examination.
  • Puppy shots and vaccinations.
  • Addressing any immediate concerns that may require future follow-up.
  • Collecting a urine and feces sample to check for infection and a roundworm infestation.
  • Discussing any past medical history that you may know about.

Also keep in mind that there are other expenses that can really affect your budget. Heartworm and flea treatment are very important. These are monthly expenses that are essential for a healthy puppy. Your vet may also discuss future dental expenses as well as how much it will be to spay or neuter your puppy—once he or she reaches the appropriate age. Keep in mind that there are health insurance programs for dogs as well as credit cards designed specifically for vet care and treatment. These offer affordable ways to care for your pet as he ages as well as for emergency or unforeseen medical issues should they arise in the future.

Having a puppy is a wonderful experience for the entire family. It gives you the opportunity to raise a furry friend and find a companion that you grow with as the years go by. Consider these tips for everything from clean-up to unforeseen expenses before you adopt your pug, so there are no hidden surprises.
