In this day and age we are living with technology around every corner. It’s on every bedside table and at the heart of every living room. So certain aspects of our health and the effort to maintain a good level of health is often pushed aside. Many times we become too busy to prioritize self care, or we simply disregard our health when we are living in the moment. Whatever the reason, it is important to make an effort to take care proper care. One aspect of our health that is often neglected and should protect is our hearing.
Technology is an ever growing part of our daily lives, and it can have a huge impact on our health; especially our hearing. We need to educate ourselves and learn more about protecting our ears, so this post contains some ways we can reduce the negative impact that technology can have on our hearing.
Volume Control
Let’s start with an obvious yet effective technique: controlling the volume settings on all your technological devices. It is incredibly easy to get lost in the music and let the temptation to turn the volume dial up higher take over. Whilse this may seem like a great idea at the time, continuously doing this can lead to permanent damage to your hearing. This definitely sounds like something your parents would nag you about – and rightly so! Listening to anything at too loud a volume on a regular basis is bound to cause long term issues. Therefore, it is essential to be conscious of whether you are listening to things at a reasonable level or not.
Use earplugs
Using earplugs is particularly useful for people who attend a lot of concerts. Those who are often around things that produce loud noises, like large machinery, should use them too. While going to concerts is intended to be a pleasurable experience for the ears (as well as our hearts and souls), it can be detrimental in terms of damage to our hearing.
To prevent hearing loss, it is important to wear some form of hearing protection. Regular concert attendees should be sure to wear something like earplugs that soften the sound, rather than block it. It will make a big difference in preventing hearing loss.
For those who are around things that produce a constant stream of loud noise, products like noise-cancelling headphones are encouraged and often enforced in work-related situations. These will help to prevent potentially irreparable damage.
Ears need a rest too!
While this may sound utterly obvious, it is often overlooked. Giving our ears the time they need to rest is just as important as taking preventative methods to preserve our hearing. This could mean playing your favorite show or album on a lower volume. You can simply taking a break from listening to anything at all. Allow time for your ears to rest for a sufficient amount of time (an evening of soft to no sound would work), before introducing sound back into your day.
Your hearing is precious. Protect it now or pay the price later.
