“If you believe, you can score with your eyes shut.” – Sir Matt Busby

Believe is set in 1984 and inspired by true events. This funny and touching tale follows Sir Matt Busby, legendary Manchester United soccer manager, who comes out of retirement to transform a young group of scallywags into a dream team.

I received a free DVD from Deseret Book to facilitate this review. All opinions are 100% honest and my own and may differ from yours.

Good quality family movies seem to be fewer and further between these days. It seems like the raunchier the movie, the more funding and advertising it receives. If you are like me, and are looking for an amazing movie that you can watch with your family, look no further. Believe is that movie. Winner of a Zurich Film Festival award for best children’s film, Believe is more than just a soccer movie. It is an inspiring story of believing that you can do what you set your mind to do.
I love that this was inspired by actual events. Matt Busby lived through great tragedy when many of his Manchester United Team was killed in a plane crash in 1958. Matt survived and rebuilt the team. He is one of the greatest managers in the history of soccer (football). He was not just a great manager though. He was also a great man. Matt Busby is portrayed in Believe by Brian Cox (Troy, Bourne Identity Series, Braveheart).

In 1984, he helped a group of U12 boys who wanted to enter a soccer tournament. In the movie, Believe, it is purported that the boys did not know that it was Matt Busby when he volunteered to coach them. Whether or not that is true, who knows, but it makes for a good plot twist 🙂 The main character, Georgie, has lost his father and his mom is struggling on her own to raise him. Georgie has the tendency to get into trouble, but Matt believes in him.

The actors in Believe are very good! I was surprised by the quality of acting from the kids who play on the soccer team. At the end of the movie, they show the kids and what teams they play for in real life. So these are just kids who play soccer. Yet, they can really act. The movie is full of emotion and humor. The story is so well written and directed. You can find out more about the actors on IMDB.

Even if you have no clue what soccer is about, you will enjoy this movie because of the way it will tug at your heart. You’ll laugh and cry and find yourself completely immersed in this wonderful movie.  Dreams are within reach when you Believe.

Believe, the soccer movie, is on Facebook with lots of fun soccer facts and debates. Give them a like and follow the conversation.

Please check out  the Movie Trailer! It’s very cute!
