My Review
If you’re a fan of adventurous stories, you will love Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold. It is a YA book, but I sort of wish it had been a little shorter and written for a middle grade audience. I have no problem with Kitty’s age and think she is a great character. I just think that the target audience might skip over this book for a couple of reasons. The cover isn’t going to appeal to a YA audience, and the majority of YA readers aren’t into adventure books. Having said that though, it will probably appeal to an older audience who does enjoy this type of book.
I found Kitty to be a really fun and relate-able character. She talks to herself a lot! Who doesn’t do that? I don’t fly a plane, but if I did, I would love to do the kind of research Kitty sets out to do. She is observing whales. How cool is that? I always thought being a marine biologist would be an awesome job. But I wasn’t that crazy about science lol. And I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska! I don’t want to run into a bear, but I would love to see the scenery. But I digress….Kitty’s adventure is amazing. The secondary characters in the story are great as well. I really enjoyed the interaction between Kitty and the brothers.
When my kids were younger, we had a game called The Yukon Trail. It was sort of like the
Oregon Trail games that are played on a PC. You know the ones…from back in the late 90’s early 2000’s 🙂 Seems like yesterday! Anyway, this book really brought back memories of this game. The places Kitty goes and the huge trail she follows are all in the game. Though I think those guys who were hunting for gold back in the gold rush days were insane, I have to admire their tenacity. That was a HARD job! Kitty finds out how hard the journey was when she’s got to follow that trail.
This book contains a ton of history, so if you enjoy learning while reading fiction, you’ll really enjoy that aspect of the book. Enjoy!
