“I have to remind myself to breathe—almost to remind my heart to beat.” —Wuthering Heights
From the Power of the Matchmaker series:
Nelle Thompson lives a life of privilege during the turn of the century New York City. When her parents are killed in a terrible accident, she’s forced to live with her aunt’s family in a small town in Connecticut, and treated as a poor relation with no financial independence. Brokenhearted and riddled with insomnia, Nelle’s health begins a downward spiral. When a locked part of her heart blossoms around her cousin’s fiancé Mathew Janson, Nelle doesn’t know if she can endure one more heartbreak. Miss Pearl, owner of the local apothecary shop, becomes a mother figure to Nelle, but a fateful summer day has Nelle questioning everything she’s ever believed and wondering if she’ll ever love again.
My Review
I am so loving all of the books in the Power of the Matchmaker series! They are all so unique, yet they all involve Pearl, the Matchmaker. She is timeless and is always right there when you need her.
In this book, Pearl appears to Nelle after she arrives at her aunt’s home. She is in despair because she’s just lost her parents and must live with her less than caring aunt. Pearl invites her into her apothecary shop for some respite. Pearl’s wisdom and love support Nelle throughout her ordeal with her aunt and her cousin, who happens to be engaged to the man Nelle is falling in love with.
I really love this book. Not only are the characters very well developed, but the setting of this book is just beautiful. I love the New York air about the beginning of the story and the small town Connecticut after the death of Nelle’s parents.
Nelle’s story is one that you will fall in love with! I love the development of Nelle and Mathew’s relationship and the relationship that Nelle has with Mathew’s mother. Nelle brings so much joy to his mother. I also love the mystery surrounding the apothecary shop that comes to light when Mathew’s mother falls ill.
I highly recommend this and all of the books in the Power of the Matchmaker series.
