Escape Winter with a Family Vacation in the Sun
Winter can get you down. Some people are lucky enough to live in a climate with a relatively mild winter; however, many of us have to suffer through cold, wet and sometimes snow-filled seasons. The days are short, which can mean the kids don’t get to play outside as much. It can make everyone tired too, especially when you have to get up in the dark. So winter is the perfect time to take a family vacation. You can all get away from the dreary weather and find some sun somewhere else. It can even be fun to have Christmas or another holiday on vacation if you feel like a change of scenery. If you want to escape winter with a family vacation, check out my list of things to do first.
Pick Your Destination
First, you have to think about where to go. If you’re looking for winter sunshine, you don’t have to leave the US to find it. There are plenty of destinations to select from if you want to stay in the country. It won’t necessarily be hot, but it won’t be super cold, either. The most you might have to do is put on a sweater. Florida is one of the most popular choices for winter sunshine, for both Americans and foreigners alike. We are heading to Florida soon ourselves! You might also choose California, just as long as you don’t venture into the northern parts of the state. Hawaii is another option you might consider for warmer weather.
Of course, there’s a whole world to explore too. And while it’s winter at home, it’s summer in the southern hemisphere. If you’re thinking of looking for some even warmer temperatures, you have many options. Australia is one of the most popular places to go if you’re willing to shell out a bit of cash for your family vacation. You could also consider Mexico or somewhere in South America for something different. The Caribbean islands have plenty to offer too, from Jamaica to the Bahamas.
Book Your Accommodation
If you’re thinking of a winter sun vacation for this year, don’t delay in planning it. Depending on when you want to go, finding somewhere to stay could be difficult. If you want to plan anything around Christmas or New Year, you could find your choices limited if you leave it too late. However, winter extends long past December, and you might want to get away in January or February. Just remember that plenty of other families have had the same idea as you. When you choose your accommodation, think about what you’re planning to do. Do you want to be close to a beach or in the middle of a city? Of course, you have a range of accommodation types to choose from too. Think about how to make the most of the weather when you decide what works for your family.
When you book your accommodation, you can use a variety of methods. Searching online is a great way to explore different dates and decide the best time to go. However, there are so many different sites that you might be unsure which ones to use. One option is to use one designed specifically for your destination. For example, you can look up Florida vacation rentals on a site that only does accommodations in Florida. The advantage of this is that you can often get a better idea of what’s available. Smaller businesses in Florida might not list their properties on the larger, broader sites.
Remember that accommodation choices don’t have to be as simple as a hotel or rental. If you’re trying something new with your winter vacation, why not go all out? You could do all sorts of interesting things. For example, what about Tree House Lodge in Costa Rica, where you can sleep in a treehouse by the beach?
Plan Your Travel
Thinking about how to get to your destination is important in winter. If you’re planning on going to a different climate, you’re likely to be going far. Flying will often be your most sensible option. This means having to book your tickets at the right time to get the best deal. Flying as a family is sometimes expensive, so booking at the right time can be crucial.
Part of this is down to when you choose to go on vacation. Holiday dates will obviously be more expensive, so they’re best avoided if you want to save money. This goes for holiday dates in other countries too, so make sure you check any local holidays. Of course, you might not be planning on flying. Perhaps you’re going to drive to seek warmer climes. If you are, make sure you’re prepared for the weather along the way.
Be Prepared for the Weather
Make sure you know what to expect when you seek out your winter sun vacation. Sure, it’s going to be warmer than at home, but how warm exactly? You can check average temperatures, but it’s no guarantee of what the weather will really be like. Does it get cooler at night? Perhaps it might even rain or storm in the evenings. Try to pack for different possibilities, just in case. When you’re with your family, you don’t want the kids to end up cold or wet because you’re not prepared. Of course, get ready for some sunshine too. Make sure you’ve got sunscreen and other necessities. Even if it’s not that hot, the sun can still be dangerous.
Plan Some Fun Family Activities
Getting away for some sun in the winter can open up lots of new things to do. You might decide to explore some things you might not have considered on your summer vacation. Depending on your choice of destination, you could find some interesting activities to try. You could go to the beach and get out on a boat for the day. If you’re visiting a city, just enjoying a leisurely walk can give you a fun-filled day.
Summer vacations are common, but not everyone considers a winter one. If you want to escape winter, it’s the ideal thing to do. Make sure you capture all of your memories with a great camera too!
