The holiday season is approaching; and, as it does, so does all the anxiety surrounding food and drink that is looming ahead. The holidays are the time of year where you are invited to office parties and family gatherings, and you’ll be surrounded with slightly (well, some very) unhealthy options. The good thing, though, is that the time of year doesn’t have to dictate how healthy you behave. Christmas, Chanukah, Thanksgiving – they’re all a time for over-indulging. But, you want and need to stay healthy through the holidays.
You need to be able to get yourself through the season and not feel bloated and affected by the all of the treats. If you do indulge, you want to ensure that you are acting as mindfully as possible. Let’s take a look at how you can get through the holidays as healthily as possible.
Stay healthy through the holidays
Make A Plan
You know what foods to expect to be served at which holiday, and you need to consider what you want on your plate. Plan ahead with meals, and choose some deliciously balanced food with a few treats here and there. Planning ahead will help you stay healthy through the holidays.
Choose Smaller Plates
Wherever you can, choose smaller plates when you are serving yourself some food. Try to load 75% of your plate with salads or fresh veggies, and balance it with proteins and something small that’s sweet. Take your time with whatever you choose and truly enjoy it!
Hydrate!
The drinks will be on offer throughout your parties and holiday festivities, but when it comes to sober living for women, hydration is about water! You want to get through the holidays without the fog of alcohol hovering over the fun. Staying healthy through the holidays means drinking a lot of water! Try to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, even throughout the time you are with family or enjoying parties.
Healthy Swaps
If you are hosting this year, try out some healthy swaps. Swap oils and butter for lighter options when it comes to cooking. Baking instead of frying. Healthy brownie recipes instead of those heavily laden with full dairy chocolate.
Enjoy The Outdoors
Baby, it’s cold outside, but that cold air is going to be a breath of fresh air that you need when you are stuck circulating in stuffy parties and family gatherings. Staying healthy through the holidays could mean starting a new tradition of a brisk walk after sitting down for some food. You’ll be able to walk off some of the calories of the meals you’ve all eaten together.
Choose To Exercise
Being active over the holidays seems redundant giving the rich foods on offer, but when you’re indulging a little, you need to balance it with activity. Make sure you’re going to the gym or attending a class to balance out the calories consumed.
The holidays are a time for spending with family and friends, laughing and joking and having fun. However, you want to stay healthy during the holidays. It should go without saying that you shouldn’t get drunk. Furthermore, don’t stuff yourself with so much sugar that you crash. You can have fun and enjoy yourself without feeling sluggish and bloated – it’s just a matter of finding a balance.
