It might be a question that we ask ourselves every day: “How can I feel better about how I look?” Sometimes there are things that we just don’t like about ourselves. And while we all know that logically we need to feel happier about who we are, it’s not always this simple.
We may end up feeling stressed about the littlest issue about our body, or we think that if we could only get rid of those wrinkles, it would solve everything. But when we start to look at ourselves in a holistic sense, is there any way to truly make us feel better about how we look?
Check out these tips and watch the video at the end of this post! No, it won’t happen all at once, but you will start to feel better about who you are and how you look.
Focus on the things you can change
With something like getting older, we can feel that we are fighting the turning tides. And when we start to look at our wrinkles or graying hair, we may very well stress out about these things. But being proactive in this respect is about focusing on the things that you can change.
If there’s a little thing about your person that you are frustrated with, like your teeth, dental implants could be one of the keys to changing your life by making you feel a little bit better when you see those pearly whites in the mirror. But we also have to remember that with these little things, nine times out of ten, only we can see them.
And though we know that the problem is within us, sometimes, if we can learn coping techniques in combination with changing those little things that we really can control, we may feel a lot better about ourselves in many ways. Another good example would be your posture. If you walk around with your head down, learning to stand up straighter isn’t just good for you, but it improves your mindset. It’s these little things that can make a big difference.
Change yourself from the inside out
Defining yourself purely by how you look is dangerous. After a while, we may very well start to create additional anxieties for ourselves. If we start to look at ourselves from the inside out, and make positive changes with regards to our own specific attitudes, we will gradually become happier and not focus so much on our appearance.
It’s important to focus on your self-esteem and define yourself in other ways rather than how you look. Defining yourself by your personality, your perspective, and your abilities can change over time. When we start to look at ourselves from the inside out, we realize that there are things that we can change within ourselves. This will make us a happier and inspire us to work at being a better version of ourselves.
Learn how to calm down when you think you look bad
Anxiety and stress can have a major bearing on how we look. When you look in the mirror and think that you look bad, you are just fueling the anxiety fire. Instead of stressing out, thinking that we just don’t look as good as we think we should, relax! Learning to calm down and implementing relaxation techniques means that when we look in the mirror we won’t think that we look so bad. Also, even if that little thought at the back of our mind creeps in, we can dismiss it as as an irrational thought.
We have to remember that, even if we focus on aesthetics, that stress and anxiety are things that will age us. Going through a stressful time results in a few more gray hairs. And if we are are looking to age with some grace, learning a relaxed mindset isn’t just a way to keep wrinkles at bay, but it can benefit our health in the long run.
Move away from the mirror
Going cold turkey on your mirror looking may seem strange, but when we start to step away from obsessing about how we look and checking every time we go past the mirror, we start to focus more on how we feel inside. It’s so tempting to check ourselves in the mirror every single time we pass one, but this can become quite an obsession. There is nothing wrong with looking good, but we have to remember that it’s not everything.
Feeling better about how we look is partly to do with the little things we have control over, but it’s also about remembering that looks aren’t everything. It’s how we feel inside. If we don’t care what people think, we are going to be happier. And ultimately, this is the thing that we have control over.
Stop caring about what other people think so much!
