Many people enjoy a drink every now and then, some more than others. However, there can be times where you may be drinking too much. Our bodies weren’t made to consume alcohol in excess. To help you get healthier this year, here are some tips for cutting down on your drinking habits.
Drink slowly
By drinking slowly, you cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink over the course of an evening or day. Taking your time with each drink certainly makes a difference in how you look and feel the following day. Try to go for drinks that have more non-alcoholic liquid in them. For example, if you’re drinking rum, have more of a mixer, like Coke, to dilute your drink more. Hopefully, you’ll have less of a hangover the next day.
A trick of drinking slowly is to make sure you’re socializing when you’re out because the more you talk, the less opportunity you’ll get to touch your drink. That means you spread the amount of drink you have over a long period, rather than a short one. And don’t ever drive after you’ve had too much to drink.
Limit yourself
A limit is good to acknowledge since our limits can often vary from others. Some people may be able to handle more alcohol than others. And although your tolerance may be high, that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Furthermore, we don’t always stick to our tolerance level.
Almost all of us can recognize when we’ve hit that point where if we keep drinking, we’ll end up drunk. At the very least, we’ll have an awful headache in the morning. Try to keep to a limit that you’re comfortable with and don’t feel pressured to drink if someone else wants you to.
Get help cutting down on your drinking habits
Cutting down on your drinking habits is always easier when you are able to control yourself. However, alcohol is a drug, and as most of us know, drugs are usually addictive. It might be worth getting help if you feel like your relationship with alcohol isn’t a case where you are the stronger of the two.
Something like an intensive outpatient program might be an option to make sure you’re looking after yourself and your health. No one ever wants to admit that they have a problem, but when it comes to alcohol, it’s good to acknowledge it before it gets any worse and out of control.
There is absolutely no shame in asking for help! You don’t want to wait until it is too late.
Set aside time where you don’t drink alcohol at all
Alcohol-free days or weeks are a smart thing to do when you’re trying to cut down on your drinking habits. It’s very easy for most of us to drink less often. When you feel like you could go a couple of days or weeks without alcohol, challenge yourself to do it. You can explain to friends or family that you’re doing a detox and perhaps explain it’s for your health. Maybe you can encourage them to do it along with you!
These tips will help you stay healthier by limiting your alcohol consumption. Remember to ask for help and listen to your friends. If they think you’re drinking too much, you probably are. A healthy relationship with alcohol is one of the most important things you can have.
