Murder in the Cemetery: An Edmund DeCleryk Mystery

by Karen Shughart

Murder in the Cemetery: An Edmund DeCleryk Mystery
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Publisher: Cozy Cat Press (February 3, 2020)
Paperback: 279 pages

On a bright, spring afternoon the body of George Wright, a childhood friend of criminal consultant Edmund DeCleryk, is discovered at a cemetery where casualties of the War of 1812 are buried. After conducting an autopsy, the medical examiner determines that George has been murdered, the cause of death by poisoning. Lighthouse Cove Police Chief Carrie Ramos hires Ed to investigate, with his spunky wife, Annie assisting him.

Suspects include a physician’s assistant, college student and a family member, among others; however, George’s demise may be the result of secrets that have surfaced from the grave. You’ll discover what Ed found on the beach in Murder in the Museum and how that, and an artifact dating back to the early 1800s, are linked to this untimely death.

Annie loves to cook, and at the end of the book she shares recipes for meals she prepared for friends and loved ones.

My review of Murder in the Cemetery

I absolutely loved Murder in the Cemetery. It’s such a cozy cozy! Even though there’s a murder (I mean, look at the title), the book just gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. You’re going to want to live in Lighthouse Cove after you read this book. I know I do!

The murder of George Wright is not an easy one to solve. Every plausible lead ends in a dead end which frustrates Ed and Carrie. I liked how this book takes place over the course of months rather than days or weeks. Even with all of the dead ends, Ed is determined to find out who murdered his friend. The length of time it takes them to solve this crime makes the story a lot more realistic. Yes, some crimes are solved quickly, but others take so long that they eventually go cold. There are so few clues leading to the actual murderer, that it’s just through careful investigation and ruling out many possible suspects that the crime is solved. There are lots of red herrings in Murder in the Cemetery, so you will have a hard time figuring out who the killer is.

The setting of this story is just so cozy. I really wanted to be in this book. Yeah, they’re right by Lake Ontario, so it would be freezing in the winter. I’d just stay inside with my books, tea, and animals! The author has a wonderful talent for descriptive writing. It makes you feel like you’re right there in the house, museum, cemetery, wherever, with the characters which are very well-written by the way. You’ll really enjoy the camaraderie in this group of characters.

I have not read the first book in the series, but I do want to go back to read it now. I can’t wait to visit Lighthouse Cove again!
