Thanks for sharing!

Welcome to the Rain Rain Go Away Giveaway Hop! I’ve got two very fun books for you and your kids. These books will definitely keep your kids entertained on rainy days.

I received these books free to review; however, all opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase, I may receive compensation at no cost to you.

It’s a Great Big Colorful World

by Tom Schamp

Age Range: 2 – 5 years
Grade Level: Preschool – Kindergarten
Hardcover: 48 pages
Publisher: Prestel Junior (March 17, 2020)

One winter morning, Otto the cat looks out the window and sighs, “Why is everything so gray today?” Luckily his friend Leon the chameleon is around to show him just how many colors there are in the world. In these exciting and funny spreads filled to the brim with brilliantly illustrated objects, Leon and Otto identify people, places, and things of every hue. On pages dedicated to infinite shades of a single color, Tom Schamp’s brilliant drawings play with perspective and unexpected pairings.

An enormous Bengal tiger lords over an orange-tinted world, while a giant blue whale dwarfs elephants, pairs of jeans, and police officers. Throughout, cleverly inserted puns and allusions will elicit plenty of laughs from parents and children alike. Parents will enjoy the numerous ways color is depicted and kids will spend hours looking for their friends Otto and Leon as they traverse the busy pages. Best of all, this delightful adventure comes to a perfect end when all the colors come together in one beautiful, joyful rainbow of fun.

My review of It’s a Great Big Colorful World

Oh my goodness! There is so much fun packed into each page of It’s a Great Big Colorful World. You and your child could spend hours exploring the pages of this book. I definitely recommend taking it in small doses because you can quickly become overwhelmed by the sights. You won’t know where to look first! This book really is fun. Use it as a seek and find for your child and have your child give you things to find too. Look around the house for colors that go with the page you’re on. The possibilities are endless!

About the Author

TOM SCHAMP’s illustrations for adults and children have appeared in numerous periodicals and newspapers. He is the author of more than 30 children’s books. Schamp lives in Brussels, Belgium.

Pets and Their Famous Humans

by Ana Gallo and illustrated by Katherine Quinn

Age Range: 7 – 10 years
Grade Level: 2 – 5
Hardcover: 48 pages
Publisher: Prestel Junior (March 19, 2020)

Did you know that Mozart’s pet starling was the inspiration for his Piano Concerto No. 17? Or that writer Dorothy Parker loved animals so much she let a pair of alligators swim in her bathtub? These are just a couple of the stories in this delightful and surprising collection that profiles the strong bond between humans and their pets. Some of these stories are touching: Frida Kahlo memorialized her pet deer Granizo in her painting The Wounded Deer. Some are a little quirky: Albert Einstein, convinced that his parrot, Bibo, was sad, told bad jokes to cheer the bird up.

Each of these wonderfully entertaining stories is made even more appealing by Katherine Quinn’s captivating illustrations. Rich in detail and reminiscent of folk art, they capture the humor and poignancy of these fascinating pairings. Together these stories and illustrations will create lasting impressions that will help young readers identify historic figures and spark joy in friendships with the animals in their own lives.

My review of Pets and Their Famous Humans

Now Pets and Their Famous Humans is a book that pet lovers of any age are going to enjoy. I feel like I enjoy it more than a child because I know who the famous humans are, so this book gives you the opportunity to educate your child about these famous humans. Kids will enjoy the anecdotal facts about the pets, but I feel like learning about these famous humans’ pets gives me a deeper insight into the human who had the pet.

Most of us literature lovers know that Virginia Woolf struggled with mental illness and severe depression. Her dog  kept her going during her dark times. And we know that Edgar Allan Poe penned the poem “The Raven.” But did you know he was inspired by a real talking raven that belonged to Charles Dickens? These are just a couple of examples of the pets and their famous humans. I really enjoyed reading this one. If you take your time to read this with your child, you’ll have the opportunity to explain things to them that they might not understand.

ANA GALLO is the author of numerous books for children and adults. She lives in Spain.

I think young family members would really enjoy Awesome Science Experiments for Kids: 100+ Fun STEM / STEAM Projects and Why They Work (Awesome STEAM Activities for Kids) by Crystal Chatterton. They love science and doing STEM and craft projects at home, so they would get a lot out of this book. Also, it seems to have good reviews.
