Congressional staffer Kit Marshall is excited to attend a historic event displaying the contents of Abraham Lincoln’s pockets the night he was assassinated at the Library of Congress. The next day, a senior librarian is dead and several invaluable artifacts are missing. Kit’s husband Doug discovers the body and immediately becomes a suspect in the death and theft.
Kit springs into action once again to figure out who is responsible for the crimes. Her sleuthing takes her to the DC Public Library, the National Portrait Gallery, Ford’s Theatre, and the most ornate, beautiful rooms at the Library of Congress. At the end, Kit must put her own life on the line to retrieve her most valuable possession, which goes unexpectedly missing as she hunts down the killer.

Did you grow up in the Washington, D.C. area?
I did not. I grew up in the middle of our country in a medium-sized suburban town. After living in California for many years, my brother Sebastian has now moved near me, which I enjoy. My parents took retirement early, sold the family home, and now travel the country and world in search of good wineries.
When did you know you wanted to work in politics?
Ever since I was little! I always knew that I would move to Washington, D.C. one day and here I am.
What do you do as a Congressional staffer?
As the chief of staff for an up-and-coming Member of Congress, I’m busy all day long. I represent my boss in meetings with constituents and lobbyists, I negotiate legislative deals with other staffers, and I manage the office and all the people who work there. It’s a 12 hour-a-day job on a routine basis.
How did you meet your husband and how long have you been married?
Doug and I met in college. He knew he wanted to become a historian studying U.S. history and I knew I wanted to work in American politics somehow. We both pursued our dreams and ended up in Washington, D.C. together! We got married a few years ago in a very unique wedding. Do you have a politician, past or present, that you greatly admire or aspire to be like? Why?
This is tough question. For as long as I’ve worked in the public trust, I’ve always kept a framed portrait of George Washington in my office. Is Washington perfect? No. But I truly think that we would not have the democracy today without his leadership. He keeps me honest. Oftentimes, I look at the picture in my office and ask myself: What would George do? He hasn’t steered me wrong yet.
When you aren’t working (or solving crimes!), what do you like to do to relax?
I don’t have too much free time these days. But when I have a spare hour or two, I like to spend time with Clarence, our beagle mutt. He’s very cute and snuggly.
If someone only had one day to visit D.C., how would you recommend they spend it?
This is another hard question. If you schedule ahead, then definitely take a public tour of the White House. Visitors need to arrange that tour with your Member of Congress or Senator. In addition to visiting the White House, here are my recommendations: United States Capitol, Library of Congress, the United States Botanic Garden, National Archives, Ford’s Theater, the National Portrait Gallery, the Lincoln Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery. It would be a long day of touring, but it can be done!
