A Bridge Home Book Excerpt

Amy smiled and exhaled. She’d been holding her breath and didn’t even know it. “I trust you, Eric. My reluctance to open up is about me.” She let out a nervous snicker. “Who wants to talk about their failures?”

He didn’t respond in words, but gave her an understanding look.

“Here’s the thing. Scott never was much of a dad. He did the bare minimum. If that.” She’d just said the words out loud. She admitted the biggest mistake of her life was choosing a man who was an indifferent dad. With her face growing hot, she skimmed away the beads of sweat forming on her hairline without being too obvious about it. What a mistake. Her stylish and flattering wool pantsuit was the wrong thing in the hot, dry air in Eric’s office. A sundress would have been better.

“I’m sorry, Amy,” Eric said. “That’s tough.”

She’d let her shoulders droop and curl forward again as if she were trying to hide. Not the picture she wanted to paint of herself. She quickly squared her shoulders and shifted in the chair. She’d told an ugly truth. So what? The floor hadn’t opened up and swallowed her whole. The earth was still spinning. She was alive and breathing.

“The worst of it is watching Cassie wait for his calls and then when they don’t come, she asks me if she can call him.” She lifted her chin a notch and added, “And he lets her down. He breaks his promises and rarely calls, even to just say hello. It’s heartless. Sometimes, he doesn’t show up for visits at all.”

“Which is why she acts out,” Eric said through tight jaws, leaning back in the chair now. “No wonder she hasn’t adjusted.”

Blunt words, but she couldn’t argue. “I think that’s the reason behind the behavior that landed me here talking to you today.”
