Super Rooster Saves the Day

by Maureen Wright & illustrated by Rob McClurkan

Grade Level : Preschool – 2
Hardcover : 40 pages
Publisher : Two Lions (October 6, 2020)
Reading level : 4 – 8 years

Ralph the rooster has big dreams of becoming a superhero. But the other farm animals aren’t so sure—except for Rosie the pig, that is. She’s Ralph’s best friend, and she believes in him. As Ralph and Rosie hang around the farm, there are just no opportunities to be a superhero and save the day…until the farmer turns on the radio, and the “Chicken Dance” song starts playing. Suddenly it seems that Ralph may have some super powers after all…or does he? This sweet book is all about the power of believing in yourself and true friendship.

My review

Ralph the rooster is determined to be a real super hero! He thinks things are just too boring around the farm, but he still tries out his powers. Ralph can become invisible…if he disguises himself as a weather vane. Okay, so maybe his powers aren’t so super, but then one day he hears…THE CHICKEN DANCE!! That really sets Ralph on the path to saving the day!

But Ralph is still not quite on the right track. He does things like setting the geese off in the wrong direction and upsetting the squirrels by “saving” them from falling “baseballs.” But the day finally comes when Ralph, with a little help from his friends, really does save the day!

This is a cute book for kids who love farm animals and the Chicken Dance (who doesn’t?). It’s a fun way to show kids that trying to be a super hero is okay, but even super heroes make mistakes. It’s when we get our friends involved that our strengths really come out! I think your little ones will find Ralph very amusing, and they’ll love looking at the colorful illustrations of the farm as you read this charming story with them.
