Traveling with Animals

Animals

Thanks for sharing!

Going on road trips as a family means that you have a long to-do list of items that you must pack and tasks you must execute before you leave. When you also plan on taking your animals with you, that list grows considerably.

For you to be able to drive safely with your family and pets, it is important that they are properly secured within your vehicle. Failure to do so not only can lead to a fine in some states, but it can also lead to a road traffic accident that could be avoided – click the link for more info from a car accident lawyer with offices in Fort Lauderdale if you are affected. Proper and legal securing will differ depending on where you live. There are also ways in which you can help keep stress to a minimum for your animal companion, which can make the drive a lot easier…

Dogs

For your canine friend, it is possible to buy a dog harness or seat belt. This will keep them secured within your vehicle, much in the same way that your own belt does. While a lot of states do not have laws regarding restraining your dog, it can be a good idea as, like with yourself, it might help prevent severe injuries in the event of an accident. These harnesses are designed for dogs of different weight limits, so you might need to look around to find one that fits your dog.

Lots of fuss and praise both before and after the journey can help your dog to feel reassured, particularly if they are not a fan of the car to begin with.

Cats and Small Animals

You can buy a cat carrier for cats that can also be used for smaller animals. These are typically box-shaped and have a handle. While they may have been created for use with cats, people do often use them for rabbits and guinea pigs too, however, they may be too large for other smaller animals, which might require their own designated container. So long as the container is sturdy, large enough to accommodate them comfortably, and has adequate air holes, it will be suitable to transport your pet.

Again, giving your pet lots of praise and love, as well as talking to them as you drive, can help them relax a bit. Some people also opt to not feed their cat prior to the journey, to reduce the risk of them vomiting or defecating on themselves in a confined environment.

Horses

If you have a horse, you will also need a good quality horsebox. This should have enough room for your horse to stand up in and be able to move their head. To keep them happy while you travel, you can hang a bale of hay on the wall. Most horses, once they are in and secure, do not mind the travel, simply the entering and exiting of the box.

Traveling with your animals, whether for leisure or a house move, might be difficult. It will always be stressful for them, as they do not understand what is going on. With your love and reassurance, as well as attention to safety, you can make it a bit easier for everyone.

When we travel with out dog we have to secure her as she gets anxious and runs around and wants to jump into the front seat which of course is a distraction for who ever is driving.
