My Review of To Fetch a Villain

If you’re in the mood for a cozy mystery story, but you don’t have much time, pick up To Fetch a Villain. It’s got 4 “tails” of miscreants and murder that are short, quick reads. You can read all four at once or just read each as you have the time.

In Ruff Day, Darby and her best friend Tianna are excited about the bark-itecture contest featuring custom built dog houses which will be auctioned to benefit the dog shelter. But when they arrive to get things ready, they find Darby’s entry already occupied. Not by a dog….but a dead woman! I enjoyed the theme in this one because I think it would be so much fun to go view custom dog houses. Darcy’s entry seems adorable, and I’m sure my dog would love it.

I really enjoyed At Your Service. The characters were well-developed for such a short read, and the plot moved along seamlessly. In this story, Jessica, a deaf author, has one of her Bichons stolen! If that wasn’t bad enough, the dog is her service dog, so not only is he precious to her, he’s essential for her! I liked how the author touched on the difference between puppy mills and legitimate breeders. I understand that there are legit breeders; however, I still say “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” There are too many homeless dogs who need a loving family! This is a very quick, pleasurable read.

A Shot in the Bark features the dog walking services provided by owner Catt Ramsey, her sister Em, and fellow employee Sammy. They’re planning a small dog fair when the donated (and bought) items needed for the fair are stolen from Catt’s shed. When the items are found, they think the worst of it’s over. Then a dead body’s found! This is another quick, fun “tail.” I like the dog walking business theme and thought that the mystery was just puzzling enough for the reader to puzzle over until near the end.

In Strut Your Mutt, PI Delanie Fitzgerald and her business partner Duncan are hired to find a stolen poodle who is worth a lot of money! Sid the poodle is from a long line of dog show winners. With Delanie on the case, the dognapper doesn’t have a chance! This is a delightful story with humor and great characters. I’m looking forward to reading more books with Delanie, Duncan, and Margaret the bulldog.

Maria Hudgins

Maria Hudgins is a mystery writer and a former high school science teacher. Jayne Ormerod

Jayne Ormerod grew up in a small Ohio town and attended a small-town Ohio college. Teresa Inge grew up reading Nancy Drew mysteries. Today, she doesn’t carry a rod like her idol, but she hotrods.
