Paperback: 234 pages
When a reality TV show for aspiring opera singers descends on Wynter Castle, Merry’s got her hands full catering to the endless demands of the distinguished judges and ambitious contestants. Then mysterious rumors about the cast and crew begin to surface, suggesting that some of their performances may be filled with false notes. When a dogged reporter with an eye for scandal who’s been covering the competition is attacked and left for dead, Merry’s determined to discover who orchestrated the heinous deed.
Her long list of suspects is filled with eccentric personalities, including a promiscuous tenor known for making unwanted overtures, a pampered young prodigy and her meddlesome mother, and a quiet up-and-comer whose shadowy uncle may have ties to the underworld. As the musical contest and Merry’s investigation near their finale, she’ll have to act fast to keep a conniving contestant from plotting out her final act . . .

Something About… Merry Wynter – Friends Are Family
I’ve lost so many loved ones over the years–my father, my grandmother, my mother, my first husband–and that was all the biological family I had. Or so I thought… I wish I had known about my Great Uncle Melvyn Wynter before he passed away, but because of a rift in my family I didn’t discover it until he was gone, leaving me Wynter Castle, the family legacy.
So through my life I have had to make a family with my friends.
Let me tell you about two of them.
Pish Lincoln: he’s like my friend, father, adviser and (in one sense, that of soul mate) love of my life all in one. He literally saved my life. When my husband died Pish, who loved Miguel too, took care of everything; funeral arrangements, probating the will, all the paperwork. But much much more than that he was my rock. He propped me up, kept me from withdrawing from the world, made me get out of the house. I think it broke his heart a little when I left New York City without telling him, but the moment he found out where I was he followed me and… he’s been here at Wynter Castle ever since.
Shilo Dinnegan: she’s like the little sister I never had. A teen waif when we met, she became a lovely model with a special appeal. She saved me by needing me. Let me tell you, after Miguel died being needed was the only thing that kept me going some days. When I left New York without telling her, she was the very first to follow me. She just packed up Jezebel, her old rattletrap car, and Magic, her bunny, and followed me to Wynter Castle, leaving me no avenue to say no, since she had nowhere else to go. And… it was wonderful. She has gone from needing me to becoming a wife and mother and artist. I love her so much.
And then there is the family of friends I found when I arrived in Autumn Vale.
Doc English: he’s like the grandfather I never had. A devoted friend to my late great uncle Melvyn Wynter, Doc has been my source of the only stories I have of my Wynter family. He’s really getting up there and his health is shaky, and I’m scared to death of losing him, but I treasure every day.
And of course there is Virgil Grace, my handsome, smart, sturdy, sexy husband. My first
introduction to Autumn Vale was Sheriff Grace staring down my cleavage, and I’ve never looked back. He’s my second (and last) husband.
There are many others: my mother-in-law and one of my first Autumn Vale friends Gogi Grace, town librarian and all around smarty pants Hannah, irascible teen Lizzie and a host of others who have helped me through scary times with more murders than should be possible in a small town.
My friends… they’re my family. How about you? Are your friends family, or are your family friends?
About Victoria Hamilton
Victoria Hamilton is the bestselling author of several mystery series including the national bestselling Vintage Kitchen Mysteries and Merry Muffin Mysteries. She does, indeed, collect vintage kitchenware and bake muffins. She drinks tea and coffee on writing days, and wine other times. It doesn’t do to confuse days. She crochets (a little), paints (a little) and reads (a lot). A solitary being, she can be coaxed out of her writing cave for brownies and cat videos.
She started her writing life as Donna Lea Simpson, bestselling author of Regency Romances, paranormal historicals and historical mysteries, and still has a soft spot for the Regency period.
If you Google ‘Victoria Hamilton’, you will find listed first a famous actress who starred as the Queen Mother in the series The Crown and as Charlotte Brontë in ‘In Search of the Brontës’. That’s not the Victoria who writes mysteries.
No, really, it’s not!
You can find her buried in a good book, (entombed in a good tome?) or online at:
