What’s It Like To Wear Hearing Aids?

Healthy Living

Thanks for sharing!

Hearing aids are an important device for people who have hearing loss. My dad wears them, and they’re a great help! However, adjusting to them can be a little difficult, and it’s usually quite daunting for people that are still facing the idea that their hearing is damaged. Yet, it’s possible to gradually get accustomed to hearing aids and make them an everyday part of your life, much like wearing glasses.

But what’s it like wearing hearing aids? If you believe that you may have hearing loss or are anxious about wearing hearing aids, then here’s some advice that can help you get a better understanding of hearing aids.

You’ll hear your voice differently when you put them on

One of the first things you’ll notice when you start using a hearing aid is that your voice will sound a little different. If you’ve ever worn headphones and tried to speak, then you’ll know that your voice can sound a bit different compared to if you didn’t wear headphones. This can be a strange sensation at first, but people generally get used to it.

Some people find that their new hearing aids might make their voice a bit too loud. If this bothers you, you can actually solve the problem by having your hearing aid specialist tune your hearing aids to prevent or limit it. The good thing to note here is that hearing aids have lots of different settings that can be adjusted to your liking. If there’s something that is too loud or quiet, you can definitely make adjustments to fix it.

You might pick up more background noise than before

Since your hearing is now amplified with an electronic device, there’s a chance that you might actually have much sharper hearing. You’ll be able to pick up background noise if your hearing aids are tuned for it, and this can be a little annoying especially if you’re in a crowded environment.

It’s a good idea to speak to your hearing aid specialist if you feel like you’re picking up too much noise. If some noises are too loud or hurt your ears, then you’ll want to immediately speak to a hearing aid specialist and stop using them for now.

People don’t really talk about your hearing aids

A close friend or family member might notice that you have hearing aids and ask about them, but most people won’t really pay attention. In fact, it’s really no different to wearing something like glasses. People understand that others may need visual or hearing aids, so it’s an accepted part of life that we all get used to.

Whether you’re interested in protecting your hearing or adjusting to hearing aids, it’s a good idea to read more about hearing loss to learn more about the condition and how it is treated. However, the best source of information usually comes from your hearing aid specialist. They’ll be able to answer any questions and also help you adjust to hearing aids comfortably.
