Beyond a Reasonable Donut (A Deputy Donut Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
5th in Series
Publisher: Kensington (May 25, 2021)
Paperback: 256 pages
Emily and her assistant, Nina, are looking forward to manning the Deputy Donut tent at the Faker’s Dozen Carnival in Fallingbrook, Wisconsin—a festival held on Friday the thirteenth to celebrate good and bad luck. But Emily has barely dropped the corn fritters in oil when bad luck boils up. First, their bucket of confectioner’s sugar disappears—and then while a mime creates a distraction, a magician robs their cash register.
After the carnival, their misfortune continues. Emily discovers that someone has broken into artist Nina’s loft and vandalized a large painting in progress with the bucket of stolen sugar, which is now on the head of the mime, who seems to have been suffocated. Emily would bet Nina was the intended victim, but the cops think Nina silenced the mime. Now Emily must catch the killer white-handed—before someone else kicks the bucket . . .
Character Guest Post: THE MYSTERIOUS CONTEMPLATIONS OF DEP THE CAT
Hi, I’m Deputy Donut, Dep for short, and I’m a cat. I know, cats don’t talk, and they don’t write, and they certainly do not solve major human crimes. However, there’s this human named Ginger Bolton. She thinks she created me, and therefore, she thinks she knows what goes on in my head, so here I am, letting Ginger speak for me.
I know I said that cats don’t solve human crimes, but we certainly solve a lot of mysteries. When you see us with our paws tucked underneath us, our tails curled around us, and our eyes closed you might think we’re taking a little catnap. Not so! We’re contemplating Every Mysterious Thing, like why is a squirrel? Whoever thought dogs were a good idea? Why does the bright, warm spot move across the floor? I know the answers because I’ve thought about it a lot, but I’m not going to make it easy for you. You have to solve those mysteries yourself.
When I was little, I had two humans, Alec and Emily. Alec gave me my name, partly because he was a detective and partly because of the circles on my sides that he said looked like donuts. Alec went to work one day and never came back, so now I have only Emily. I don’t want to lose her, too, so I go to work with her at the donut shop that Emily and Alec’s father, Tom, named after me.
Yes, it’s called Deputy Donut, and that’s why I’m Dep for short. Emily and Tom built me a playground in their office, and they designed the place so that I can look out windows. I can watch them in their restaurant’s kitchen while they make donuts and coffee and some of the other strange things that humans like. I can sit on the back of the office couch and watch Emily and Tom and their assistants taking those things to tables where their customers chatter and eat in the café’s dining area. Emily takes me other places, too, and I do whatever I can to protect her.
For instance, she plans to take me to the bachelorette party that she and her friend Misty are throwing for their friend Samantha. It’s just the three of them staying in a cabin out at the Lake Cares Away Resort. And me! I don’t like riding in the car even though I’m supposedly safe in my special carrier that gets seatbelted in. How is a self-respecting cat supposed to unravel mysteries that zoom past too quickly for anyone to see?
Lake Cares Away Resort is what they call pet friendly, so that’s good for me and my desire to be around Emily, but pets can include dogs and, I hear, Cares Away might allow horses to stay in special cabins they call stables. I’ve never met a horse, but I hear that they don’t bark, so maybe they’ll be okay.
But dogs? You can bet that if a dog threatens us, I’ll tell it exactly what I think about it, and it will go away and never bother Emily, Samantha, and Misty again.
Samantha’s wedding is after the Faker’s Dozen Festival, which is not pet-friendly, and celebrates good and bad luck. I’m glad I’m a tortoiseshell Tabby, not a black cat, because I’m definitely good luck, and I think black cats probably are, too, not that I spend much time around cats. Other cats can be awfully opinionated. I hear that the black cat that crosses your path at the Faker’s Dozen Festival is not real. It’s like a furry robot. Well, I can’t blame other cats for not applying for that job.
We have more important things to do, like Think About Things. And watch out for our people when they’re as thoughtful about our comfort as Emily is.
If any cats read this and want to offer their opinions, go ahead. I’ll respond. If I feel like it. Bye for now, though. A paw needs licking.
About Ginger Bolton
Ginger Bolton writes the Deputy Donut mystery series—coffee, donuts, cops, danger, and one curious cat. The first four books in the series are SURVIVAL OF THE FRITTERS, GOODBYE CRULLER WORLD, JEALOUSY FILLED DONUTS, and the latest, BOSTON SCREAM MURDER. JEALOUSY FILLED DONUTS was chosen as the Woman’s World Best New Cozy Mystery of the week and was named as one of Dollycas’s Best Reads of 2019. BEYOND A REASONABLE DONUT will be on store shelves May 25, 2021. When Ginger isn’t writing or reading, she’s crocheting, knitting, sewing, or generally causing trouble. She’s also fond of donuts and coffee. As Janet Bolin, Ginger wrote the Threadville Mysteries—murder and mayhem in a village of crafty shops.

Laura & Moustache says
Hi Dep – My name is Moustache. I have black cat relatives such as you speak of. While I have a good deal of beautiful black, shiny fur, I also have distinguishing white markings. Can you guess one?
The cats that really scare me are those white ones with blue eyes!
People think they look exotic and mysterious. I can tel you, not all their thoughts are positive ones. They try to keep the best sleeping spots, high and sunny, for themselves. They pretend not to like the food, but then won’t let me near the bowl! How is that fair??
I was happy my mom read books about you. She shares parts with me.
I think we could be friends.
