Southern transplant Emma Lovett and best friend/colleague Leslie Parker can hardly believe it: it’s Emma’s third year at Thomas Jefferson High School, and in addition to an amazing year with boyfriend Hunter Wells and Leslie’s brand-new love interest, they’ve gotten all the way through Homecoming with no one dying.

Oops.

At the end of October, Emma finds the strangled body of Charlie Foreman, one of Leslie’s favorite nemeses. And the first clue implicates Leslie in the crime! To make things worse, Emma’s feeling a little oogy: tired, dizzy, and something’s up with her eyes. What’s going on?

All Emma and Leslie are trying to do is find new methods for teaching the youth of America, hopefully using lessons from The Great Bard—their hero—William Shakespeare.

But someone has a different idea: more schooling in murder.

Character Guest Post: Leslie Parker

I am a High School English Teacher. Last year, one of my new classes was SCIENCE FICTION! Coolest days ever—talking about ideas Ray Bradbury put into stories that are all HAPPENING now in our everyday lives, like headphones or skinny televisions on walls! Well, excepting the mass book burnings, thank goodness. I also have a second and third profession, I suppose—that of crusader against PDAs (Public Displays of Affection) in school hallways, and educator of anyone who’ll listen about the joys and genius of William Shakespeare. Indeed, “I count myself in nothing else so happy/As in a soul remembering my good friends!” I consider William a good friend . . . (that’s from Richard II, by the way. I don’t think I’d be Richard’s good friend!)

Oh, and I’ve now assisted MY good friend Emma Lovett three times in catching a murderer. Neither of us want that to be our profession, but we do our best, especially since our Chief Detective Carl Niome is chief of big ol’ losers, in my opinion. Other peoples’ too, they’re just much more diplomatic than I am.

I am a voracious reader, very far beyond the curriculum I teach or the investigating procedures I must practice. I’m currently in the middle of my second Fredrik Backman book—called My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry. The first one: A Man Called Ove—is so wonderful, and now this one is turning out to be as well. I think he is topping my list! His characters are oh-so-flawed but you can’t help but love them. Kind of like me . “If sack and sugar be a fault, God help the Wicked!” Henry IV

Stephen King is another one of those geniuses I alluded to earlier. I gravitate toward The Green Mile when I’m feeling saucy and paranormal, or The Shawshank Redemption when I’m remembering the joy of karma. Both of those for that reason, I guess. I also love King’s horror (and Koontz! Did I mention Dean Koontz?) because they both have the ability to scare the poop out of you, but I feel they are also closet idealists. Secret romantics. Always, always rooting for the good guy. This surprises people when I say this, but read some. Youi’ll see.

I decided the other day I wanted to play someone evil in a book, if I was going to be a character—the villains are much more fun. Maybe the Red Queen? Muah ha hahahahaha . . . OFF WITH HER HEAD!

Gah! Because of last year’s and this year’s health events afflicting me and Emma, my ideal pastime of eating copious amounts of fried foods in the presence of whatever hottie is currently accompanying me, has been compromised. Grr. I’ll have to embark upon a new search for my bliss. Any ideas? Let me know!

About Kelley Kaye

“Kelley Kaye” taught High School English and Drama since 1992 in California, then Colorado and now Cali again, but her love for storytelling dates back to creating captions in her high school yearbook. Maybe back to the tales she created for her Barbie and Ken—whatever the case, the love’s been around a long time. She’s married to an amazing man who cooks for her, and they have two funny and wonderful sons.
