Railroaded 4 Murder (Sophie Kimball Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
8th in Series
Publisher ‏ : ‎ Kensington (August 24, 2021)
Mass Market Paperback ‏ : ‎ 336 pages

While planning her wedding, Sophie “Phee” Kimball gets sidetracked by the murder of a model train enthusiast . . .

Phee’s marriage to Marshall Gregory promises to be the wedding of the year in Arizona’s Sun City West—that is, if you ask her mother Harriet. But before she can walk down the aisle, it looks like she has to solve one more murder. At a model train exhibit, Phee, Harriet, and their beloved Chiweenie, Streetman, discover the body of Sun City West’s railroad club president, with an incriminating tap shoe near his lifeless corpse.

Wilbur Maines may have loved model trains but apparently he was not a model husband. There are rumors of affairs with hot-to-trot hobbyists the Choo-Choo Chicks. The police suspect his wife—and Harriet’s friend—Roxanne, who dances with the Rhythm Tappers, but Phee’s mom is convinced they’re on the wrong track. Before the poor woman is railroaded into spending the rest of her life behind bars, Phee, Harriet, and the book club ladies will need to do some fancy footwork, infiltrate the dance group, and find the real culprit before the killer leaves the station . . .

Character Guest Post: Look out Rand McNally – I’ve Got My Own Map

By Streetman Plunkett (with help from Ann I. Goldfarb and James E. Clapp, writing as J.C. Eaton)

Mine! Mine! Mine! Okay, so I tend to be a bit territorial when it comes to food, toys, blankets, and anything else in my house. My owner, Harriet Plunkett, will tell you it’s part of my Chiweenie personality, and that I’m her “special little gladiator.” Boy, do I eat that up! Especially when her no-nonsense bookkeeper/daughter, Phee, looks like she’s about to gag when Harriet dotes on me.

I’m a beautiful brown Chihuahua-Dachshund mix, not more than seven pounds depending on how many extra treats I steal. Harriet rescued me when I was only two and since then we’ve been inseparable. And yes, I do have a few quirks like hiding under the coffee table when someone comes to the door, or snapping at the air for no apparent reason, but even Phee can’t dispute my detective skills.

If it wasn’t for me, the dead body across the yard from ours would still be there. Same for the latest find at the model railroad exhibit. And while the local deputies, Ranston and Bowman, try not to get too close to me, I’d make the perfect addition to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Sun City West, Arizona. That is, when I’m not dancing. Did I mention I learned how to do a cute little doggie dance? Unfortunately, the venues I selected weren’t exactly overjoyed.

I’m what you call a desert dog. I abhor water and will run faster than a greyhound if someone even whispers the word bath. I also bark at quail, rabbits, and coyotes, all from my side of the sliding glass doors to our patio. That’s not to say, I don’t do this on walks, but I’m far too preoccupied sniffing.

That’s when Harriet got the idea to draw a walking map for me. And not just any neighborhood walking map, but one that details the dos and don’ts of my sojourn. She went to lengths to document where the poisonous Sonoran Desert Toads are and which houses have toxic Sago Palms.

She also put an asterisk next to those neighbors who love little dogs like me and a big exclamation point next to the people who become downright unhinged when I walk by. Phee tried to use the map once, but gave up and drove me to the dog park. But the real map is great news for readers!

Famed cartographer Rhys Davies (Think Louise Penny’s Three Pines map) drew the actual one that appears in Railroaded 4 Murder and I am overjoyed. After all, how many cozy mystery dogs have maps drawn for them?

Each map comes with a key so readers who want to take me for a fictional walk will know how to go about it. To find out more about me, check out the Sophie Kimball Mysteries and be prepared to laugh out loud!

Your friend, Streetman

Thanks, Streetman! My kitties would squish you! One of them weighs 19 lbs. 9 oz. He’d love you though! Have fun with your walks! I think other cozy mystery dogs will be very jealous of your maps.
