The Spirit Woman of Lockleer Mountain
Paranormal Mystery
1st book in 2 book series
Publisher : Elk Grove Publications (December 27, 2020)
Print length : 252 pages
There are sightings of a woman and a mountain lion near Lockleer Mountain, seen at moments of crisis. Is she the legendary Native American’s Spirit Woman, sent to protect the community? Nate is convinced his sister, missing for three months, and surely suffering from amnesia, is the elusive woman. He fears she will not survive the coming winter months, living wild in the wood with a mountain lion.
While Deputy Nate Darling pursues a relationship with Lou Shoemaker, he and Sheriff Peabody pursue a drug dealer, selling to the youth at the Native American reservation. Things are even more complicated by civil unrest regarding the government’s secret plans to build a mysterious facility, a big box store, and a housing tract close to Lockleer Mountain, threatening the livelihood of the local merchants.
Is there any hope that the Spirit Woman, real or imaginary, can bring harmony to the troubled community? Will Nate be able to apprehend the drug dealer, locate his missing sister, maintain his budding romance, and guarantee the financial future of Lockleer Mountain?
Character Guest Post: The Spirit Woman’s Lion Awaits her Return
I’ve come to this vantage point, high on the hill above Lockleer Mountain to ‘people watch.’ I’m alarmed at the increasing number of humans in town over the last few days. People skittering this way and that, shouting and gesturing. They block the sidewalks, dart in front of cars, and cluster in groups on the street corners.
Their comings and goings is always worthy of a few minutes contemplation, but the increased numbers in town is puzzling. There’s a different mood below; agitation, anticipation, as well as hostility and greed. The troubled atmosphere makes the fur on my back ripple and shiver. It feels like trouble brewing. She will sense their need, as well, and She will come. The Native Americans call her the Spirit Woman, but She is my friend and protection. Soon, it will be as before, hunting together at dawn, running together at sunset, resting during the heat of the day. Whenever there is trouble, She returns to the valley to protect the community. It is imperative that she return soon.
Turning away from the valley, I rest on an outcropping of rocks near the reservoir. I lift my head to follow the arc of an eagle as it rides the air currents, gently gliding left and then right, then with a flap of its majestic wings, changing direction, drifting down, until it catches another air current.
With a whip of my tail, I shoo a fly from my back, close my eyes and twitch an ear, determined to evade the pesky insect. True contentment is basking in the warm rock beneath my belly and the sun on my back as I wait.
A cloud drifts across the sky, momentarily blocking the sun and casting a shadow over the terrain. At a sound, my eyes fly open. A gentle breeze shakes the bramble of bushes below the rock. I slowly rise and cock my head to listen. Is my wait finally over?
I gaze along the shrubbery beneath the rock and into the trees beyond. There! Coming through the trees! Her long green skirt, darker than the surrounding shrubs, swirls around her ankles. Long dark hair cascades over her shoulders. She raises her arm and greets me with a sign, the silent language we share and understand.
I feel the muscles ripple across my shoulders as I leap off the rock to greet her. I kneel at her feet and she touches my head. In the troubled town in the valley below, there is greed, unrest, and turmoil. Together, the Spirit Woman and I, her trusty companion, will attempt to bring a resolution to the troubled, protect the innocent, and lead them to the answers they seek.
