Food blogging is turning Hope Early into a household name. But the dead body down the block makes her a #1 suspect . . .
It seems everyone loves Hope’s blog these days, and she’s busier than ever volunteering to help other women create their own paths to success. So she’s shocked when a neighbor petitions to run Hope right out of her small Connecticut town! Set in her ways, apparently Birdie Donovan doesn’t like the chaos Hope’s sleuthing creates, the police activity and crime scenes, and it’s happening way too often lately. Eager to make amends, Hope bakes Birdie a batch of her best muffins. The delicious treats might have smoothed things over—until Hope discovers Birdie dead in her gazebo the very next day . . .
Now instead of worrying about holding on to her beloved home, Hope is trying to stay out of jail. Because suddenly she’s the lead suspect in the case. Not even her boyfriend, Police Chief Ethan Cahill, is promising he can clear her name, much less discuss the investigation with her. It’s up to Hope to get to bake new ground on the case before the lifestyle brand she’s created—and her whole life—crumbles . . .
Includes Recipes from Hope’s Kitchen!
Author interview
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
I’m thrilled to be able to share a bit about myself and my writing journey.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born and raised in New York City. Now I live and write full-time in Connecticut. When I’m not writing, I love to bake. Scones are my favorite. I do have a writing companion, and her name is Connie. She’s a two-year old Shih Tzu.
How long have you been writing?
Forever. Over the years, when I was unpublished, there were times when I did write because of work and other responsibilities but I always came back to writing fiction. Then in 2013 I joined a critique group and within a year there were just two of us left in the group and we’ve been working together since then. In 2015, I shifted from writing romantic suspense to writing cozy mysteries and in 2016 I had an agent and my first three-book deal from Kensington.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
Yes. I always knew I wanted to write books. I’d been reading cozy mysteries for years and loved them, especially culinary themed cozies. After writing a few romantic suspense manuscripts that went nowhere, I took stock of what I liked about them and found similarities to cozy mysteries. So I decided to try writing another cozy mystery (I’d written one way back in the 1990s) and I’m so glad I did.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
I’m reading The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
I do. I like to write in my office. Connie spends the day in there with me on her bed beside my desk.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
My planner, my novel’s outline, reference books, a pumpkin spiced candle, a water bottle and a cup of coffee.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
There were so many between the school library and the book sales, I don’t remember the first book I read. I do remember getting a box of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy mysteries from my older cousins. I was so excited to read them. I don’t recall a favorite childhood book.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I prefer physical books. I think it’s because that’s what I grew up reading and read for most of my life. But I do read e-books. I love their convenience and I love how easy it is to impulse buy.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
Alaska.
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
I think all the authors of the books I’ve read since I was a child have influenced my writing.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I do have support from author friends. I’ve been working with a critique partner since 2013. I’m also fortunate to have author friends that can send pages to for feedback and/or brainstorm with. I’ve been in and out of writing groups over the years. Right now with my critique partner, my small circle of author friends and agent, I haven’t found the need to join another writing group.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m currently working on the next Resale Boutique mystery. This is my other cozy series that I write and it features Kelly Quinn, an out-of-work fashionista turned consignment shop owner. It’s a fun series to write that has all the elements of cozies we love plus a little chicklit tossed in.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
It was my pleasure!
