The beasts came and destroyed our world. Kilhaven’s founders defended themselves, and for the past 150 years, the walls of this small village, where Jarvis Graye lives, have kept them out. This fall, though, something feels different. 13 year-old Jarvis is living his usual life, dreading school, cleaning up after pigeons at his courier apprenticeship, and trying not to humiliate himself in archery class. At least he’s got his best friend, and there’s even an interesting new girl around. But… the strange noises, the dead deer, now the missing boy – the clues are there that something sinister is afoot. Jarvis suspects his weird neighbor is to blame. But first, he must find proof. With Jarvis’s life and the safety of the village on the line, he and his friends race to uncover the truth and stop the one who is behind it all.

The Society of Watchers Book Excerpt
They allowed the wick in the beeswax candlestick to burn through the early hours of the night, but by two o’clock in the morning it had finally gone out, leaving the room in utter darkness. Jarvis, who had two full glasses of milk before bed, woke sometime around three in the morning. The only light visible came from the moon that shone brightly in the now cloudless sky. The window was still open, but the air had grown considerably colder. Jarvis, not sure if he was awakened by the cold air or his need to use the bathroom, got up, shivering, and crossed to the window to close it.
Outside, the pale light highlighted the window frame as well as the swaying grass in the massive field. However, that wasn’t the only thing Jarvis saw.
He spotted a shadowed figure lurking through the stalks of grass. From this distance, however, Jarvis couldn’t tell whether it was a man or an animal. He squinted as the silhouette crept through the field. The hair on the back of Jarvis’s neck stood on end. What was it he was seeing? He wanted to wake Aron, but he knew that if he left the window he might lose sight of the mysterious thing. Slowly, the creature, for lack of a better word, inched its way through the grass. Jarvis couldn’t take his narrowed eyes off it. Perhaps it was a deer that had escaped the preserve. It had happened before. Jarvis leaned further out the window, hoping to get a better look. The wood pane creaked beneath his weight, breaking the silent night. The creature stopped, raised its head, and leered in his direction. For a brief second Jarvis didn’t move. His stomach twisted into knots and something inside of him told him to duck.
He did.
But it was only a fox, he told himself.
