Ghost Cat on the Midway (A Tenth Life Cozy Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting – Fictional Town of Ocean Cove
Independently Published (August 29, 2022)
Print length : 195 pages
This summer, there’s trouble brewing at the Cove County Fair.
Camelia Collins, Ocean Cove’s most recent resident over seventy years of age, is all set to go to the fair! The smell of the popcorn, the roar of the crowd, the Ferris wheel and the pony shows—things she remembers from childhood and looks forward to experiencing again.
But something’s up at the Cove County Fair. When Camelia meets the keeper of a rescued tiger, she could not have predicted that keeper would soon be dead and the tiger gone missing. A rogue band of aggressive animal activists seems the obvious culprits, but they deny the act.
Only one entity knows the truth—the ghost cat Soji, but will the capricious spirit decide to come forward before someone else dies?
My review of Ghost Cat on the Midway
I’ve read several of Mollie Hunt’s books and have loved them all. Ghost Cat on the Midway is her newest book, and I loved it too! It’s the follow-up to Ghost Cat of Ocean Cove, the first book in the Tenth Life Cozy Mystery Series. The series revolves around Camelia Collins, a new resident in the small town of Ocean Cove, and Soji the Ghost Cat who came with the house!
In Ghost Cat on the Midway, it’s time for the Cove County Fair, and Camelia is volunteering at the Kitty City Cat Rescue booth where they’re raising money by selling pies! They’re selling a few other things, but PIES would definitely make me stop at their booth. While wandering around the fairgrounds, Camelia makes the acquaintance of a lady who owns a tiger! (I’ve read that story….which door should I choose?!) Her tiger is very old and very tame. It’s about this time that Camelia thinks she sees Soji at the fair. She’s shocked because she didn’t know Soji could show up just any place! Did she really see Soji, or were the shadows playing tricks on her mind? You’ll discover the answer to this and many more mysterious events when you read Ghost Cat on the Midway.
As with the first book, I love the characters in Ghost Cat on the Midway. They are an eclectic bunch! Camelia’s neighbor Vera is my absolute favorite character. She’s a riot! I hope to be as cool as she is at that age! Along with Vera, Camelia’s other neighbors have quickly become her friends. These characters are well-written and relatable. If you’ve ever had a teenager, you’ll be able to commiserate with another of Camelia’s neighbors. Momming is hard! It’s the little details that the author adds to the story that make these characters come to life.
I love that this book mainly takes place at the fair. I haven’t been to a fair since my kids were little, so I really enjoyed the authors careful depiction of the fair including the smells! I wish I could smell a funnel cake right about now! I loved reading about the various tents with their contests and ribbon winners. One part of the story reminded me of an Andy Griffith episode where Aunt Bea cans some pickles that definitely wouldn’t win a ribbon! I’d love to be a judge in the pie, cake, and cookie categories. All of these details really made me feel like I was at the fair along with Camelia and friends.
Of course, the mystery was front and center during all of these events too! I had no idea whodunit until the big reveal. It’s a very puzzling and very enjoyable mystery!
Ghost Cat on the Midway has it all; memorable characters, an interesting and fun setting, a ghost cat, pie, and a mystery that will get you guessing! I highly recommend this book to all cozy mystery lovers!
