Character Guest Post: Pearl Parties and…Murder?!
By Kelly Silverman
Hi, I’m Kelly Silverman! And today I’m writing about something I never thought I’d write about. Oh, of course, I’ve talked people’s ears off about my pearl business. I run it with my sister, Jodi, in addition to working at a card store. Just something extra to help pay the bills and maybe have a weekend getaway once or twice a year.
I never thought it would lead to this, though. Let me tell you a little bit more. I’m just a normal gal in her fifties trying to make a living. When I ran across the Pearls Unlimited site, I was intrigued. It looked fun, so I checked out a few of their sales reps. Selling jewelry for a little extra dough seemed like a great gig.
So, I sat down over a nice hot bowl of chili with Jodi and pitched the idea to her. She agreed. As long as she didn’t have to go on camera or touch the oysters. I get it. It’s kinda gross. They smell and they’re slimy. But I don’t mind.
With that settled, we got everything set up. I ordered lights and a backdrop, and we converted our basement into a makeshift studio where I did live pearl parties via the web! My buyers (or anyone, really) could tune in to my live feed and watch me shuck oysters, remove the pearls and then they are set in a piece of jewelry.
The fun part is seeing what color and size pearl you get. You may want to buy a completely different piece of jewelry once you see it. Or, if you’re really lucky, you’ll get twins! TWO pearls in ONE oyster. That opens up a whole host of possibilities, especially if they’re close in size and color. You could do earrings or a double setting.
But anyway, enough about jewelry (though if you want to know more, I can send you a catalog). We were having a swell time selling jewelry via the web. My parties were going really, really well. I had lots of orders and the business was on a positive trajectory. It supplemented our income nicely and plus, I enjoyed it.
Jodi managed all the orders, set up the party dates, helped me think up party games to play to make the parties more interesting and helped me package up prizes, too.
We had a great gig going. And then Jodi booked the ultimate in parties…or so we thought. A weekend-long pearl event on-site at a massive estate. How these people found my little outfit or why they decided this would be a good idea is beyond me. I mean, these super rich elites wanted my little pearl company to come up and spend the weekend with them, shuck some oysters, sell some jewelry, and enjoy all their food and amenities? I couldn’t figure it out. But, as Jodi, pointed out, it didn’t matter. We’d hit the big times. Hundreds of oysters sold before the party. The commission we’d make in this weekend alone would cover our expenses for the month.
So, I shoved aside my concern and I packed a bag. I had a bad feeling when we got to that house, though, but I pressed on. Little did I know less than twenty-four hours later I’d be investigating a murder (AND accused of one).
I NEVER thought owning my own business would lead to this. But here we are. If you’re interested in how it all shook out (you never know, I could be writing this blog post from jail), check out Murder of Pearl and come along with Jodi and I for a wild weekend!
