Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Severn House; Main edition (January 3, 2023)
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 224 pages

Tish Tarragon is catering for a wedding, but the weekend goes from sweet to sour when a guest at the venue is poisoned.

Literary caterer and owner of Cookin’ the Books cafe Tish Tarragon is pushing thoughts of her impending eviction aside to prepare an appetising welcome buffet for a wedding weekend at Abbingdon Green Bed and Breakfast. While there, Tish witnesses one of the guests, controversial TV chef and restaurant critic, Gunner Randall, threatening staff after missing breakfast and making do with a mushroom omelet.

When Randall is found dead the following day, it soon becomes clear that poisoned mushrooms were behind his demise. With no shortage of potential suspects and motives, can Tish and her new beau, Sheriff Clemson Reade, uncover who was enraged enough with the unsavoury star to silence him for good?

Character Guest Post

Hey, y’all, I’m Julian Pen Davis, Channel Ten weatherman and occasional featured reporter here to tell you all about the latest murder here in Hobson Glen, Virginia.

Celebrity chef Gunnar Randall – the host of Taste of America and the chef Americans of all ages just love to hate – has been found dead in his room at Abbingdon Green Bed and Breakfast, an apparent victim of mushroom poisoning.

Henrico County’s Sheriff Clemson Reade is on the case along with his loyal deputy, Officer James Clayton, and the Sheriff’s Office’s newest consultant, Tish Tarragon.

Along with being my bestie since our days at University of Virginia, Tish is the owner of Cookin’ the Books Literary Café and Catering. Well, she was the owner of the café, until Tish’s ex-boyfriend and landlord, Schuyler Thompson, served her with eviction papers shortly after their break-up (She told him to shut up – something the entire town would love to tell him now that he’s been elected mayor). Tish has been left to search for a new home for herself, her cat, Tuna, and her business, but so far the only places she’s found available are tiny storefronts in strip malls located next door to Weight Watchers and Jenny Craigs.

Oh, it’s all a mess, honey!

I’ve urged Tish to move in with her hunky new squeeze, Sheriff Reade, but Tish doesn’t move too quickly in relationships. In fact, Tish’s baker and our mutual friend, Celestine Rufus, has often said that on the freeway of love, Tish is a station wagon full of nuns. It’s a pretty fair analogy. Although as a lifelong singleton whose only experience being swept off my feet was being scooped up by a snowplow while reporting on a winter storm in front of the Edgar Allen Poe museum, I try not judge these matters too harshly.

Luckily for the people of Hobson Glen, whatever relationship savvy Tish might lack, she more than makes up for with her cooking and her ability to solve crimes. She’s like the Julia Child of Scotland Yard. Or maybe it’s more like the Sherlock Holmes of the kitchen. Either way, she’s fabulous! Which is a good thing because with half the country wanting Gunnar Randall dead, someone with serious cooking knowledge is needed to figure out not just how the chef was poisoned, but when.
