by Valona Jones

Snuffed Out (Magic Candle Shop Mystery)
Paranormal Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting –   Savannah, GA
Crooked Lane Books (January 10, 2023)
Hardcover 304 Pages

Twin sisters Tabby and Sage co-own a candle shop, but will it all go up in flames in Valona Jones’ series debut, perfect for fans of Amanda Flower and Bailey Cates.

30-year-old fraternal twins Tabby and Sage Winslow own The Book and Candle Shop in Savannah. Sage is hot-headed and impulsive while Tabby is calm and collected, making them the perfect partnership. When one of their customers is found murdered, from a blow to the head, that partnership is put to the test.

Blithe McAdam had been seen in a heated argument with shop clerk Gerard, which immediately makes him suspect number one. The twins are convinced of Gerard’s innocence and start digging into Blithe’s past. But no one is cooperating. The neighbor who found the body isn’t talking, medical examiner Quig won’t give any details about the autopsy, and nasty rumors begin surfacing about the drowning of Blithe’s father years earlier—evidence that could seal Gerard’s fate.

Tabby and Sage dig desperately for the truth. But it’s not only their friend who’s in peril. With the clock ticking, the twins find themselves in the grip of an unseen and deadly energy that has seeped into their midst—and in the sights of a ruthless killer.

Character Guest Post

Hi Everyone, Sage Winslow here. I’ve never been one to mince words, and I don’t tolerate fools. My twin sister, Tabby, and I own and run the Book and Candle Shop in Savannah, GA. Lately, she’s stepped up to the plate in a big way, keeping our clerk from going to jail for a crime he did not commit.

Valona Jones, my connection to your reality, gave me this opportunity to speak out in this blog today, and I went for it. You see, Tabby is the point of view character of our story. She never even thinks to hand me the microphone for just a few minutes. That’s not her fault, per se, but it still rankles that I am voiceless.

I’m the pretty twin. People tell me I have witchy green eyes and a strong personality. I have straight black hair and it’s long. By contract, Tabby has brown eyes and blonde hair. We’re fraternal twins in case you haven’t guessed by now.

We share a twin-link we use as a means of communication. It’s the same as telepathy, but it’s a tight beam, only for each other’s hearing. I use the link primarily to assert my need for an energy donation. Tabby doesn’t mind sharing her energy, not one bit, but she’s lucky to be a true Winslow, one who recharges nightly from the heavy currents in the ground beneath our ship. My recharger doesn’t work that well, and I never know what’s around the next curve. Consequently, I need to face the world with a full charge on board.

We’re energetics. It’s better to rip that bandage off in one fell swoop. We live in a different world than our ancestors, and psychic phenomena are almost household words. The Winslows can manipulate energy. That means we can give you some of ours, or we can take some of yours.
Not only do I receive energy from Tabby, I’m an equal opportunity energy taker. I view everyone as my personal power source. Some have called me a leach or an energy vampire. Those names hurt. I can’t help what I am. By the way, do you have any energy to spare? (Be grateful I asked first because I usually don’t.)

My lucky duck twin got herself another talent right out of the gate. Tabbu can turn herself freakin’ invisible. We’ve done secret tests over the years, and everything she’s touching when she goes invisible also goes invisible, like her purse or umbrella or even me. Those items become visible once she is no longer touching them. I would kill to have a gift like that. I admit I’ve always been proud of my twin. It goes both ways. She’s proud of my skills, even the plant mama ones that take me away from the shop.

We’re a good team in the shop. I handle online orders, inventory, payroll, and anything else that doesn’t have to do with crafting candles or soaps. Tabby makes our candles and soaps, and she does a darn fine job of it.

Except when she doesn’t, which happens right away in our fictional debut in “Snuffed Out.”
