Author Guest Post: About Our Labrador Retrievers

Our adventure with Labradors began on our first wedding anniversary. My sisters surprised us with a Labrador puppy named Bear. Although each Lab has had his or her unique personality, they’ve shared some common traits. Loving, high-energy, mischievous, friendly, and funny.

Bear escaped out of our backyard multiple times, winding up in the strangest of places including a hospital, a pet store, a gas station, and the local police station. A children’s story based on one of Bear’s adventures is on my website:www.storystacy.com.

Buddy was our next Labrador, followed by Rudy. I think about Buddy every time I make the bed. One of his favorite things to do was to jump on the bed while I was attempting to put the sheets on. He thought that was hilarious.

Rudy was Buddy’s guilty conscious. Whenever Buddy got in trouble, Rudy would hang his head. We knew something was up! One Christmas, Buddy and Rudy managed to wrangle the beef tenderloin out of the sink where it was defrosting. When we returned from visiting family and friends on Christmas Eve, we discovered our Christmas dinner was gone! Fortunately, I was able to find another tenderloin, so all was not lost.

Our current Labrador, Eve, is a rescue from Texas Sporting Breed Rescue. We adopted her after losing Buddy and Rudy within months of each other. We lost Buddy to old age and Rudy to inoperable cancer. We were devastated.

Eve was ten months old when we adopted her and is an angel. She’s now nearly ten and still full of energy. Duke, Liz’s sidekick in the Liz Adams mystery series is loosely modeled after Eve. Although Eve can’t detect when people are lying, she’s a communicator. She howls the words “I love you” for her breakfast in the mornings.

I donate a portion of the proceeds from my books to causes that support homeless people and homeless pets. For Carmel Conundrum, I’m donating to causes that support homeless pets, including Texas Sporting Breed Rescue.

I’d love to hear your Labrador stories!
