Mini Meadows, a Tiny Home community in rural Central Florida, is home to Emma Wells, a downsize specialist who left her daddy’s mansion and her inheritance behind in favor of a simpler, more peaceful life in a tiny home that was once two shipping containers. But when she opens a shipping container and discovers her dead client sitting in a rocking chair, neatly wrapped and labeled, and two of her friends end up on the suspect list, Emma pitches in to help find the killer. With plenty of clues to unpack, Emma narrows down the suspect list, but as she begins to close in on the culprit, she realizes if she’s not careful she could end up in a box of her own.

Author guest post: Inspiration

People often ask me where I get the inspiration for my stories. The short answer is… Everywhere! No matter where I go, I find something that inspires me to write. It can be something that strikes me as funny, or odd, or sad, or scary. But whatever feelings it brings out in me, it also brings inspiration.

One day, my husband and I pulled into a Walmart parking lot. A brand new shiny red corvette pulled in at the same time and parked a few spots away from us where we had a clear view of the car’s occupant emerging. Now, I don’t know what comes to mind when I think of who might be driving a red corvette, but I can tell you it was not this woman. She was amazing!

She was a very petite elderly woman dressed in a velour sweatsuit, high top sneakers, and a headband. She bopped across the parking lot with a pep in her step that had my husband and I both sitting and staring. Neither of us made a move until she was out of sight.

That woman became the inspiration for Granny Rose in No Small Murder. Before I had any idea what the story would be about, before I knew what any of the other characters would be like, before I wrote a single word, I knew Granny Rose would play a huge role in this story.

Now, every time I read the first scene, when Granny pulls up to Emma’s tiny home in her shiny red corvette and emerges as a teeny bopper version of the woman Emma has always known and bops across the street, it brings a smile and a happy memory of that woman who seemed so thrilled with being her.

As the story progressed, I realized she was missing something. Companionship. And I asked myself what kind of pet that woman in the Walmart parking lot would have had. What kind of pet would be perfect for a rail thin, four-and-a-half-foot tall woman of a certain age? And it struck me—a Great Dane. So Granny adopted Butch and moved with him into Emma’s four-hundred square foot tiny home with Emma and her cat, Ginger.
