When murder trends too close to home, social media influencer Coco Cline will have to swipe through a sea of trolls to tag a killer.
After cracking her first case, Cordelia “Coco” Cline’s life is finally getting back to normal—or as normal as life can be when you have over three million followers online. With a thriving business, a devoted boyfriend, and her two besties living right up the street, Coco is set to have the most fun summer of her life until Larry and Rosalynn Dunmer move into the condo next door.
Coco and her friends do their best to avoid the confrontational duo, but when a party at a swanky new wine bar brings everyone together, things become less than neighborly faster than a celebrity-themed hashtag goes viral. Larry levels some super shady threats toward Coco and her BFF Jasper, which could have dire consequences for their multimedia empires. Just as Coco begins to wonder if she’ll have to spend the rest of the summer looking over her shoulder, she gets a shocking request from police. As part of her PR gig with the Central Shores PD, they need her to come to the beach and keep the public at bay. A body has washed ashore.
Thinking a poor swimmer drowned just before the Salute to Summer festival kicks off, Coco arrives to find Larry Dunmer, dead with a corkscrew sticking out of his neck. What’s even more unbelievable is that Jasper quickly shoots to the top of Chief McInnis’s suspect list. In full-on panic mode, Coco decides to use her tech-savvy sleuthing skills to clear her best friend’s name before his rep is ruined. She soon discovers that Larry made quite a few enemies during his very short stay in town. But who hated him enough to kill him?
Return to the beaches of Central Shores as Coco Cline and her squad assemble to catch a killer before they get canceled…permanently.
Guest Post: A Chat Between an MC and Her Author
Hi, Christy’s Cozy Corners! Thank you so much for having me today as I celebrate the release of my latest cozy mystery, #TagMe for Murder, Book Two in the Trending Topic Mysteries. I thought I’d do something a little different for my guest post today. I’m letting my main character, Coco Cline, put me in the hot seat to answer some of her burning questions. Of course, I’m the one who typically makes the decisions in our partnership, so it might be fun for her to turn the tables on me.
Coco Cline: I have so many questions for you, but first, I need to know: you’re a self-proclaimed introvert, so how did you decide to write a character as over-the-top and outgoing as me?
Sarah Burr: That’s a good question, and one I sometimes ask myself, LOL. Your boundless energy and fearless engagement with the people around you tires me out by just writing about it! But exploring your extroverted personality allows me to live vicariously through you. Having these imagined experiences is fun because I could never get the courage to have them in real life.
Coco: Why am I a social media influencer?
Sarah: Fun fact: You weren’t always. When I began writing about you, you were just a lifestyle blogger. Becoming a social media influencer grew naturally from your character development and your blog’s popularity. Social media influencers also weren’t a thing back when the idea for your story first came to me. Years passed as I worked to finesse the manuscript, and influencers were suddenly popping up everywhere. Seeing how your character has evolved with technology and the changing social landscape is so cool.
Coco: That’s pretty wild how you’ve had to adjust your writing to accommodate pop culture as we know it today. Okay, so why murder mysteries? My story could have been one about self-discovery and finding love. So, why throw murder in the mix?
Sarah: Mysteries have had a special place in my heart since I started reading Nancy Drew books at age seven. I love the idea that justice and good will always prevail, even in the face of evil. We need more hope like that in our world, and it’s one of the reasons why I write mysteries in general. I enjoy bringing a sense of hope to readers. I also find mysteries a lot easier to write. I don’t know why. I’ve tried writing thrillers, and I have written fantasy, but something about a mystery just feels right. I love creating a vexing puzzle; I try to keep readers guessing for as long as possible. I also enjoy writing scenes where friends band together to save the day. Sleuthing with friends is way more fun.
Coco: I agree with that. I don’t do much investigating alone, mainly because it’s no fun that way. And it’s dangerous. How did my besties, Jasper and Charlotte, introduce themselves to you?
Sarah: I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but this is another mark of Nancy Drew’s influence on my life. Nancy, Bess, and George have long been my favorite trio of friends (Harry, Ron, and Hermione are a close second), and they set the standard for my friendships in life. So, when I began writing #FollowMe for Murder, Trending Topic Mystery Book One, I wanted to pay homage to the iconic trio, which is why there’s you, Jasper, and Charlotte. I love the different perspectives Jasper and Charlotte bring to your investigations. And their personalities – gosh! Each could be their own main character, right?
Coco: Hehe, definitely. Just don’t tell my boyfriend he’s been excluded from our group!
Sarah: Actually, I think Hudson’s character holds a really special place in the Trending Topic Mysteries. In many cozies, you have some type of budding romance as a subplot. Sometimes it’s a will-they-won’t-they, sometimes it’s a love triangle. I wanted to try something totally different, which is why you and Hudson are already together at the start of Book One. Yes, you have your differences at times, but Hudson’s always your rock and a huge supporter of your work and you, his. There may be drama elsewhere within the mystery, but at the end of the day, readers can be reassured that you and Hudson will come home to each other and figure out what’s going on. You make such a great team.
Coco: Aww, that makes me so happy to hear. Yeah, Hudson’s pretty special. Okay, for my last question: this is a cozy mystery. Why don’t I have a pet?
Sarah: Haha, I had a feeling this was coming! Yes, I broke one of the cardinal rules of cozies by not giving you a dog or cat companion. Honestly, at the time, you didn’t have a pet because I didn’t have a pet when I first wrote your story. I didn’t think I could write authentically about it. Luckily for me, my situation has changed, and Eevee, our Aussie shepherd mix rescue, is the light of my world. But, sorry, Coco, your life is way too hectic to adequately care for a pet. You’re hardly ever home and always on the go, so until things in Central Shores quiet down, you will have to be content volunteering with Charlotte at the local animal shelter.
Coco: Fair enough. Note to self: be less busy!
Sarah: That’s going to be hard to achieve. With your lifestyle blog, influencer work, and social media consulting firm, there’s a lot on your plate. And now that your ornery next-door neighbor, Larry Dunmer, has washed ashore, murdered, things will only get wilder in Central Shores!
