Murder To My Ears (An Octavia Fields Mysteries)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Independently Published (June 30, 2023)
Print Length 260 pages

Octavia Fields should know better than to judge things by their appearance. After all, most people don’t expect a nomadic hippie to be a classical violist—let alone one who runs a seasonal music shop at Aerie Pines, the summer home of the Aerie Peaks Symphony.

But when her business season starts off on the wrong note, it’s obviously the persnickety concertmaster’s fault. If he hadn’t turned up dead—leaving Octavia to find his body— she wouldn’t have to deal with the handsome detective who isn’t sure what to think of her impressive arrest record.

With symphony members cornering Octavia to pass on “evidence” by way of sotto-voce rumors, it shouldn’t surprise her to learn the helpful musicians aren’t the only ones who believe Octavia’s helping with the investigation. When a threatening letter arrives, it’s clear the killer thinks she’s playing harmony to the detective, too.

When the detective doesn’t appear to be making progress on the case, Octavia decides it’s up to her to solve the mystery—before the killer hears their cue to silence her!

Character Guest Post: Octavia

I’ve been written into a book. You’re going to love it! There’s music and friends, a little flirting, and murder.

You read that right. Murder.

But I should probably introduce myself. Hi! I’m Octavia Fields. I’ve been asked to tell you a little about myself—and I do mean a little. My author has warned me that I’m not supposed to go on and on, or to head off on too many tangents.

So, probably the first thing you should know about me is that people think I’m strange. That doesn’t really bother me, though—it says more about them than it does about me.

I’m a classical violist, and I used to play with the Aerie Peaks Symphony. Until they decided I wasn’t symphony material. They were probably right. Living on someone else’s schedule isn’t really my thing. So I took over the violin shop at Aerie Peaks, a gorgeous park in the Rocky Mountains where the symphony makes their summer home. The musicians all stay on the campus, like a giant summer-long camp for grown-ups.

Running the shop there gives me the chance to hang out with my best friend, and to keep up on things in the music world.

But the rest of the year is what I live for. I hook up my tiny house on wheels to my hippie van and travel wherever the roads decide to take me. No one’s schedule. Nobody’s itinerary. Just me and my viola, and whatever music speaks to my heart.

I only ever have one thing on my calendar: being at Aerie Pines by mid-June to open my seasonal shop.

If only someone had warned me that this year was going to be different, I might have taken my time getting to Aerie Pines.

You’ll never guess why.

Oh, wait. I already told you. Oops!

This year, I had the misfortune of discovering the death of this violinist I know. You know what that means. Aerie Pines was overrun by detectives and all the other things that go along with an investigation.

Which probably wouldn’t be such a big deal if I didn’t already have an arrest record. That little
record was all the invitation the lead detective needed to start trying to understand me and my life.

Oops, my author’s giving me a side-eye. Let’s just say, If you like your characters on the quirky side, chemistry that befuddles the people who feel it, and some gossip thrown in with your murder, you’ll enjoy my story!
