A cat who thinks he’s a detective. A group of amateur female sleuths in a quiet beach town. A dead man. It’s a recipe for fun – unless you’re the local police chief.

There are worse ways to go than sitting on a beach chair in Paradise Cove with a refreshing drink in your hand. But who wanted the victim dead? Detective Whiskers will need all his new friends to solve the case, but do they even want to talk to him after solving his first murder has
gone to his head?

Sheila’s grandson comes to visit Paradise Cove and love is in the air, along with too much body spray, when young Freddy meets Susi the housecleaner. He might regret staying in town, though, when the murder investigation turns in his direction.

The Paradise Cove Murder Society and Detective Whiskers are on the case … and getting in Chief Anderson’s way again.

My Detective Whiskers Cozy Mystery Series is about a cat and his human companion who find themselves in the middle of a series of murders in a quaint beach town. It is also about moving on from an unwanted disruption in life and discovering the best new chapter you can write in your life.

Whiskers and Sheila both had their lives turned around wen Fred, Sheila’s husband and Whiskers’ mentor, suddenly died on the day he was set to retire. They moved to the beach house Fred had bought and started their lives over.

My own life was disrupted three years ago when Hurricane Sally uprooted my family and me only four days after moving to a new home in Orange Beach, Alabama. Things changed in one long, scary night. How would we start again?

A month later we moved into a different new home an hour away. My wife had found work at a local university. I had work that I could do from home but it wasn’t fulfilling my personal creative needs.

A couple of years before, we had taken a cruise with some friends and I had spent every night of the cruise writing a novel on the balcony of our cabin (the one time we actually splurged for a balcony). I loved my writing time. The whole vacation was wonderful but the writing was an unexpected bonus. Away from my regular responsibilities that was how I chose to spend my free time. Then, when we returned home, the book was set aside unfinished. With my life in upheaval after the hurricane I finally returned to the book and finished it. Then I realized there was a prequel already in my brain and I wrote that story as well. I self-published them and waited to see how they would be received.

Crickets.

Other than family and friends, not many people read those books. I spent more money on editing and getting a cover than I recouped in royalties. So I failed as a writer. That’s how some people would view the situation anyway. And how I felt at times. But writing those books had given me joy and, if I’m honest, some therapy. I wrote stories that needed to be written whether anyone read them or not. I turned my attention to look at the silver linings and looked at the comments I received from friends and in reviews from the handful of strangers that found the books. I considered their feedback and did research to see where the things I did well matched up with the books that people were willing to spend a little of their hard-earned income to read. I found a genre, cozy mysteries, that I believed I could write well and that readers wanted more of. I considered the best way I could add to the existing market in that genre. I dreamed up several ideas for series. Then I picked one and started writing the Detective Whiskers Cozy Mystery Series.

The first book in that series, Paw and Order, was released in May of this year while I was finishing the second book and creating a storyline for the third book. The initial reviews started coming in and readers loved it! With each new release I saw more and more readers discovering the series. Sales were picking up and I was earning more than I was spending. Success!

So where am I now? Book four is about to be released as I write this guest post. It has more pre-sale orders than any of the previous books and reviews for each of the already published books has gotten good reviews. I’m not yet earning a lot of money and what I do earn is being put back into building my new business. The business of being an author. With each new release I gain more readers, more followers on Amazon, GoodReads, BookBub and other online channels. More readers sign up for my newsletter. All of these things make it easier to earn a profit from my next book.

So, just like the main characters in the series, I’m at the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Is it scary? Yeah, sometimes it terrifies me. Do I love it? Absolutely! Every morning I get on my computer and look at the statistics for my books and see that while I was sleeping somebody was reading my stories. I see new reviews pop up. Most of them are good reviews from happy readers. The best part isn’t just that they gave a book a good review. What I love most is when they mention something specific about the book that they enjoyed. Knowing which characters and situations made reading that book a great experience for them gives me personal joy and helps me make sure I put more of those characters and situations in the next book.

Thank you for helping me write a new chapter in my life. I have a feeling it will be the best chapter yet!
