Home for the holidays…
Or home for good?
Once upon a time, Ben Cooper left his hometown to follow his dreams of becoming a big-city doctor. Now he’s back to run his father’s clinic and spend Christmas with his daughter, not to fall for McKenzie Price, the woman who broke his heart. But when McKenzie steps in to help Ben reconnect with his little girl, and old sparks begin to ignite, will Ben give up city life for a second chance at love?

My review of The Doctor’s Christmas Dilemma
The Doctor’s Christmas by Danielle Thorne is a sweet, heartwarming romance from Love Inspired, and I adored it! It is a second-chance romance filled with wonderfully written characters. It’s a story that reminds us how much our past can influence how we view the world as well as ourselves.
Doctor Ben Cooper has returned to the town where he grew up in order to temporarily fill in for his dad who is recovering from heart surgery. McKenzie Price, the girl who broke his heart, has never left, and surprisingly, she’s still working at the popular diner in town. Since it’s been years since they’ve seen each other or talked, you can imagine their first encounter. All of those past memories come flooding in with Ben remembering rejection and bullying, and McKenzie remembering their close friendship which ended abruptly when she wouldn’t leave with Ben.
I just loved these characters! Thorne brings them to life on the page. You can feel their feelings. Even if you don’t have a background like either Ben or McKenzie, you can sympathize with them. The side characters bring so much to the story too. There are laugh out loud moments thanks to some of them. You’ll be exasperated with others.
Thorne weaves the theme of forgiveness throughout the book, and in the end, we see how healing forgiveness is. Being bitter and unforgiving hurts us more than it hurts the ones we’re holding those feelings towards. Ben and McKenzie’s story is beautiful.
I highly recommend The Doctor’s Christmas Dilemma for its lifelike characters, charming small town feel, sweet romance, and its messages of forgiveness, faith and hope. If you love inspirational, small town romance books, you will love The Doctor’s Christmas Dilemma!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Author Guest Post: Memories and Collard Greens
The late autumn weather is refrigerator cold in the morning in central Georgia then it warms up during the afternoon most of the time. But it’s just when the leaves begin to turn that my memories step forward as if they’ve restrained themselves all year to keep me from ruminating over my late birthday and the end of another chapter of my life. I always think about Thanksgiving as the season changes. If November kicks off the holidays than Thanksgiving must be the ringing of the bell. Most of my recollections are of my wonderful mother, Roxie, baking her famous crescent rolls from scratch all week and then the hours we’d spent together in the kitchen on Thanksgiving day. She made a beautiful turkey and gravy, and a cornucopia of desserts—allowing each of us six kids to choose our own.
In my new book, The Doctor’s Christmas Dilemma, my heroine, McKenzie Price, and the hero, Ben Cooper, go to a friend’s Georgia home for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner party that has no turkey or other fixings in lieu of the upcoming holiday. What a fun idea! Regardless of what we snack on Thanksgiving week, there’s always the hovering anticipation of tradition and turkey to come, so I sure don’t mind a trip to the Red Robin for a burger and fries while preparations are underway.
My husband’s career in air traffic made Thanksgiving different than what we both experienced growing up, but I still treasure the time I had with my four boys even if some of our holidays were nonconventional. I never mastered the art of crescent roll making, but through the years my southern friends have passed on sweet potato and cornbread dressing recipes to me, and I’ve even acquired a taste for collard greens.
Collards were originally cultivated in ancient Greece but are now widespread throughout the world and used in just about every kind of cuisine from Europe to South America. In the southern U.S., they are known as soul food, the cozy, comforting, traditional meal recipes of the African American community. They’re believed to have first been cultivated here in colonial Virginia and were eaten later by enslaved persons in the Southern states. Family recipes were passed down through the generations eventually making their way to the tables of everyone—because they’re inexpensive, easy to cook and delicious.
Collard greens are high in Vitamin K and super nutritious. In my opinion, they’re the perfect side for stewed meat or beans. The leftovers also keep well in single-serve freezer containers for whenever I get a hankering for some to go with my pintos and cornbread. So while the country debates on cornbread or biscuits and ham or turkey every year, I look forward to a spoonful of hot, green collards steamed in bacon fat and chicken stock with lots of seasoning.
Happy Holidays. I hope you enjoy good food, good friends, and of course, a good book!
