When the wealthy matriarch of the dysfunctional Means family dies in her sleep, the family is convinced her death was anything but peaceful. They hire Corrie to prove it, but the only evidence they have to go on is a psychic’s half-baked vision that it was murder. To put the matter to rest, Corrie sets her sights on proving the psychic is a fraud. After all, everyone knows psychics are crack-pots, don’t they?

But what should be a simple investigation morphs into something deadly. The deeper Corrie digs, the more bizarre clues are revealed, and a possible witness is found dead. As tempers rise, it’s up to Corrie to catch a killer… who’s about to strike again.

Attitude is Everything

It’s all in the attitude, my heroine, Corrie Locke, says and she is so right. Without the right attitude, we may accomplish what we set out to do, but not nearly as well. My heroine is a young, newbie lawyer who works as a lawyer in a movie studio. She’s not that great at it, probably because she never sticks around her desk too long. Her other job keeps her plenty busy.

Whenever a P.I. case pops up, it’s bye-bye movie studio, and hello to hunting down criminals. Corrie has got the skills, thanks to her late great P.I. dad. Nothing gets in her way, even when curve balls are thrown at her from different directions, like in my latest book, MURDEROUS MEANS. Her determined attitude gets her over the hurdles…eventually. Sometimes, a quick change of attitude makes all the difference for her and me, too, in my real life. Here’s an example:

I’ve been lucky enough to adopt rescue dogs. We started out adopting an Australian shepherd who was many handfuls! But he enriched our lives, even with his antics and high energy, for fifteen wonderful years.

We recently adopted two German shepherds. Willow is our fifth rescue dog.

A young shepherd that was found wandering the California Mojave Desert, the rescue organization informed us that Willow seemed shy and timid. We didn’t know anything about her, other than she needed a home and seemed to get along with other dogs, which was important, since we had Chico, another shepherd that we’d had the good fortune to adopt. Willow was skittish and flighty. But slowly she warmed up.

A few weeks after we adopted her, we needed to visit the vet for an ear infection. Not sure what to expect, I gave us an early start. The moment Willow realized she was going into the car, she took off. She must have sensed what was up.

Catching her took a while…like twenty-five minutes. Getting the leash on her was the next challenge. Willow didn’t mind the leash when we went on walks but this time, she was adamantly opposed. We have a large yard, which she used to her advantage by disappearing. I finally called the vet and told them we’d be late. They said they couldn’t fit us in if we weren’t on time.

Finally, both exhausted, I got her into the car. Neither one of us was happy, and we faced a forty-minute drive ahead of us. We were not off to a good start. I knew I needed to change my attitude to change the situation around.

I listened to an uplifting lecture on keeping a positive attitude, and the world suddenly looked different. Brighter. I relaxed, telling myself we’d get there at just the right time.

Every stoplight was green, there was no traffic, and Willow chilled out in the backseat. We arrived
with a minute to spare (and no speeding on my part)! The attitude adjustment made all the difference.
