It’s springtime, and Tabby figures what better way to unite the town of Crystal Cove than creating a community garden! The problem is, she knows nothing about tending the earth. However, there are several folks in town who have strong beliefs in how to start a garden right—unfortunately, all of these strong beliefs seem to disagree with one another.
Tabby thinks she has it handled when she comes up with a system that makes each group of gardeners feel valued in their plans and opinions, but when one of the most opinionated women turns up dead in the middle of the fresh soil, it seems she has another murder on her hands—and one she feels at least partially responsible for.
Join Tabby, Jay, Aaron, and Sherlock as they investigate and try to get to the bottom of this garden tragedy.
Author Guest Post: The Life of a Burgeoning Sleuth – by Tabitha Chase (aka Denise Jaden)
Hi! I’m Tabitha Chase. Even though my dad insists my full name sounds more professional, most of my friends call me Tabby.
It all began when I drove through the pouring rain into a seaside Oregon town called Crystal Cove. The plan was to sell my late Aunt Lizzie’s houseboat. Get in, get out. Don’t give people your name or a chance to get to know you. Those were the instructions from my dad, the Senator Conrad Chase.
As a junior realtor, this should have been a quick and easy flip, or so I thought. But on my way into town, I came across a dead witch in the middle of the road. What’s worse, the police arrived and wanted to blame me for her death!
Since then, I’ve not only cleared my name, but I have also started working with a couple of local detectives in solving cases. To my father’s dismay, I picked up a job at The Heirloom Café, and now almost everyone knows my name.
I’ve fallen in love with this seaside town and have spent endless hours learning about my late aunt who used to live here. She had a vision for Crystal Cove to be a warm and welcoming community, and my inner drive to make that vision a reality has kept me from running back to Portland, no matter how many disputes or even murders take place within the town.
Oh! And I almost forgot to tell you about Sherlock, didn’t I? My aunt’s cat is even better at solving mysteries than my detective friends, and he’s been helping me to learn about my family’s special brand of magic, too. You see, unlike any other cat I’ve ever met, Sherlock wears glasses and a blue crystal around his neck that I’m convinced helps him to mind-speak to me—but only when no one else is around. He appears to read detective novels, and often gives me a nudge when I’m going off course on a case. His short little legs make it hard for him to keep up, so you’ll often see me carrying him toward an investigation into a new suspect.
When I first came to this town, I was a big ol’ skeptic when it came to magic. But I’ve been learning to harness my intuition through crystals, sea glass, and my talking cat. The longer I stay in Crystal Cove, the better I’m able to rely on my intuition. Are you more of a skeptic like I used to be, or have you experienced something that’s made you a believer? If you could have any magical ability, what would it be?
Another friend—or possibly more than a friend—I’ve met since moving to Crystal Cove is Detective Jay Jameson. He’s tall and blond and often doesn’t dress like a police officer. Even though I’ve known him for over a year, he makes my heart flutter every time he looks in my direction. He has always had a fascination with the town’s magic, and even though I am rendered mute every time I try to talk about my family magic to anyone outside of my family, I get the sense that Jay knows there is more under the surface with me.
Speaking of family, my sister Pepper has recently moved to Crystal Cove to live on the houseboat beside mine. She has been studying to become a research doctor, and the local hospital here, which is often understaffed, offered her an internship where she can continue to learn and to help heal those who need it.
I hope you will visit me in Crystal Cove soon. I’m about to start a community garden, which should really unite the town… providing nothing goes wrong.
Unfortunately, things are regularly going wrong in Crystal Cove, and I often find myself in the middle of catastrophes. Still, I hope you will come for a visit. I would love to show you around the marina, where I live on my aunt’s houseboat, the Lady of Fortune, and make you one of my special coffee creations at The Heirloom Café. Besides, if I have to solve another murder, I’d sure like to do it with new friends!
I hope to see you there.
Love,
Tabby
