My review of A Lighthouse Snapshot
I have loved every book in the Bluestar Island series, and A Lighthouse Snapshot is no exception! It’s the ninth book that takes place on Bluestar Island, but it can be read as a standalone. It’s a charming, clean romance with secret identity and opposites attract tropes.
These books have such a cozy feel to them because the setting is this small island where most of the residents know each other. Some of the residents overlap in the series, but the recurring ones only play small parts in each book. The more I read of the Bluestar Island books, the more I feel like these characters are my friends. They would be if I lived there!
Lainey Dell has been following a road trip that her late mother took. She found the journal, and she’s convinced that her mom came to Bluestar Island. She’s just not sure why. Lainey’s a travel blogger and photographer. But that’s her secret identity. She is actually Elaine Devereaux, a contract attorney and heir to her father’s huge fortune. But, she loves the life she’s been living since taking a leave of absence after her mom’s death. Lainey is a very likable character with a determination for finding the answers she seeks.
Jack Turner has lived on the island for almost his entire life. Most of his family still live on the island. In fact, when Jack collided with Lainey, one of his brother’s had just proposed to his girlfriend. Lainey had taken the opportunity to capture a snapshot of the moment when, trying to get a good shot, she stepped in front of Jack’s golf cart. Talk about an awkward meet-cute! Jack is determined to remain single, but he finds himself falling for Lainey and her easy-going nature. Jack has experienced grief and disappointment that’s led him to this singleness vow, but Lainey breaks through his tough shell.
As I said, the island setting is so cozy, and I want it to be a real place that I can move to! It’s a ferry ride away from Boston, but it feels like a completely different world. The downtown shops are adorable, only golf carts are allowed on the roads, people are (mostly) friendly, it’s got the ocean…what more could you want?
The romance that develops between Jack and Lainey feels authentic even though they haven’t known each other very long. When you know, you know. They say opposites attract, and it’s true with this couple. Lainey brings out the best in Jack. I really love this couple!
I highly recommend A Lighthouse Snapshot for its island setting, opposites attract and secret identity romance tropes, well-written characters, and page-turning plot. I couldn’t put it down, and I think romance lovers will adore it!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Book Excerpt
He couldn’t be late.
Jack had an important meeting with his group from Sharps Unlimited. They mostly worked remotely. Once a month, he was required to travel into Manhattan to work in the office for a couple of days. Once in a while, it was longer but most of the time he was able to work remotely from Bluestar Island. He loved the freedom of being able to work in shorts, choosing the hours he worked, and so many other privileges.
Jack enjoyed a quiet, regulated life until his family descended upon him. He was the only one of the six Turner siblings that was ever on time for anything—and by on time he meant at least fifteen minutes early.
Jack sat back in his dark blue golf cart, the island’s primary source of transportation. His cousin Summer Turner waved to him as he made his way through town. Jack waved back. Lily Adams also waved. Jack waved again. This happened repeatedly.
And then Mary Miller flagged him down. The woman was in her sixties and very active in the town’s gossip mill. She wore was a serious look on her round face and he worried that something was wrong.
When he pulled the cart to a stop, she rushed up to him. “I talked to Melinda Coleman and she said you’re bringing chocolate chips cookies to the party tonight. Is that right?”
This was important enough to flag him down? He stifled a sigh. Tonight was a surprise birthday party for Horace Blackwell. For all of Jack’s life, Horace had been known as the town Scrooge but this past Christmas there had been a miraculous change in the man. Maybe it was almost dying that changed him. Then again, maybe it was Melinda’s big heart that had Horace transforming into a genuinely friendly person. Or maybe it was a combination of those things as well as the Christmas spirit. Jack didn’t think he’d ever know the true reason.
It didn’t matter. Melinda wasn’t letting up on her project to reintroduce Horace to society. She’d planned a smallish birthday party for him that evening at the bookstore and somehow Jack had gotten roped into not only attending but bringing cookies. He made a mental note that he’d have to swing by the Elegant Bakery after his online meeting to pick up a dozen cookies. They had the finest baked goods on the island.
“Yes,” he said. “I’m bringing cookies.”
Her eyes lit up. “Oh good. And would you happen to be bringing a date?”
Now he knew what had been the emergency. Mary was attempting to set him up. “No—”
Before he could get out another word, she said, “My niece is on the island for a visit. She’s your age and she’s so beautiful I just know you two would get along famously.”
“I’m sorry. I’d really like to talk more but I’m late for a meeting.”
“Oh. Okay. I just wanted to tell you about Janet. She’d be perfect for you. I know you’re going to love her.”
He inwardly groaned. “I’ve really got to go.”
She nodded in understanding as she continued to talk. “We’ll see you at the party this evening. I’ll tell Mary you’re anxious to meet her. Remember, the party is a secret.” She lifted a finger to her lips. “So shh…”
