Hello from my cozy writing nook in the Pacific Northwest! I am so grateful to be invited to be included here to share a bit about my book, Secrets and Scandals, and about my writing.
Though I started out writing children’s books, when I decided I wanted to write for an older audience cozy mystery seemed like the most fun genre to jump into. I love reading cozy mysteries and watching mystery movie and television shows too. And unique to cozy mysteries, I especially love how cozy authors often include animals as key characters.
I don’t want to give away any of the story, but I will say there is a dog named Jasper in Secrets and Scandals that I based on my dog who passed away, named Emmett. Emmett was a black lab mutt rescue dog who was the best-behaved dog I have ever met. He was patient and friendly, loved kids and other dogs too. When I wrote Jasper, I used Emmett’s physical description and character traits. For example, when Emmett used to get excited to go on a walk he would spin around in circle, so I had Jasper do that too. Writing Jasper was a really lovely way to get to revisit Emmett’s memory.
I also love how writing allowed me to visit the imaginary town of Gilman whenever I sat down at my keyboard. I based Gilman on the town of Bend, Oregon. Bend is a mountain town in the high desert region of central Oregon about seven hours from where I currently live. It’s a small town filled with restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, and outdoor outfitters. As a place my family has gone for years to camp and vacation, I have many happy memories there. I loved being able to craft my story based on Bend, while also adding new and interesting places and things to the setting to make Gilman unique. I set the book in the fall, so in my imagination I could stroll the streets of Gilman during my favorite season, regardless of the weather outside my window (which in the Seattle area, is usually rain).
The response to Secrets and Scandals and been so kind and encouraging. That is another great reason to write in the cozy mystery genre – the readers are the best! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who reads one of my books.
