An Inconvenient Vision

Celine Skye isn’t just a psychic art sleuth. She’s also a businesswoman: the owner of a vineyard, winery, and wine bar. But it’s hard to keep the two worlds separate, and that can make for some excruciatingly embarrassing moments. As on this particular wine tour Celine is helping to conduct in Bearer of Secrets:

Celine stared at her fingers in dismay. They looked so white, bony, and nerveless. It will all unravel, she whispered to herself. Malice, like a hot, burning acid, flowed through her veins, consuming her being. And it serves him right. 

She’d paid a horrendous price for her part in the whole affair. The cancer had sapped her of her beauty and vitality, making her all but bald. 

She’d done it for him. She’d thought he loved her, that he cared. 

But all he cares for is himself. Self-centered bastard. 

Her long white fingers tapped out the well-remembered number.

“The Manet was supposed to be my insurance policy,” Celine heard herself rasp out. “But it’s worth absolutely nothing. You knew that, didn’t you?”

“Listen, I had no idea. I’m as flabbergasted as you are, sweetheart.”

Lies. All lies. To think she’d once loved him, fallen for that phony charm. 

“My bills had better be taken care of,” she croaked. “There’ll be hell to pay if they aren’t.”

“Of course.”

Lies. All lies.

She smiled maliciously. “Don’t forget I know where the bodies are buried.”

Someone was shaking her shoulders. “What bodies, Celine? What bodies?”

Shirley’s voice rang alarmingly close to her ears, jolting Celine out of the trance she’d fallen into. 

“What are you talking about, Celine?”

Feeling as though she’d been slapped into wakefulness, Celine blinked and looked around. The dark living room she’d found herself in with its stench of illness and death had dissolved. She was back in the Cab-er-Neigh tour bus with Shirley and twelve other passengers.

At the back of the bus, Beth rose. Holding onto the seats as the van’s momentum caused her to sway and bob, she made her way to the front. 

“You’ve had some kind of a vision, right? What was it?”

Rattled and unnerved by what she’d experienced, Celine shook her head. 

Beth’s eyes were on her, skeptical. Celine would have to offer some kind of explanation for what had happened. But what?
