Author Interview
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
How long have you been writing? I am a fairly introverted person and I’ve always found it easier to express myself through writing. I’ve been scribbling stories, poems, and tidbits in notebooks since elementary school.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre? Yes!! Mysteries have always engaged my brain, plus I love humor. Many people use humor in their daily lives (to make friends, to cope with stress, and sometimes to keep people at a distance). My novels will always contain humor within the cozy mysteries.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now? I read a lot of books on the craft of writing. When I read fiction, I tend to lean toward older classics like Agatha Christie and Lilian Jackson Braun, but then also some fantasy like Daughter of the Forest. I wish I had more time to read. Right know I’m splitting my reading time between The Grieving Brain and another nonfiction title, Criminal Evidence.
Do you have a favorite place to write? All my books are written via dictation — while I rollerskate. I rollerskate dictate!
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)? Too much stuff! Pens, paper, sticky notes, a printer, pictures, knick knacks . . . this is why I must get on the skates and get away from all that.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child? My first books were definitely by Dr. Seuss, but my favorite read of my childhood will always be The 18th Emergency.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why? LOVE physical books but I will take audio or ebooks on vacation — easier to pack.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose? New Zealand . . . it’s always New Zealand.
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer? My introvert personality led me to be a lifelong observer. People watching is a wonderful place to find stories . . .
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups? I have some wonderful author friends! They have been there for me—through thick and thin. This year has been a real struggle and having kind author friends to lean on has definitely helped me through the grief.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it? I’m giving myself the space to return to Pin Cherry Harbor and start the next case in my Harper and Moon Investigations Series. This is especially difficult, after a deep personal loss.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
