A formal declaration of love scares the bejesus out of small-town Detective Rory Naysmith. As Valentine’s Day approaches, he evaluates his relationship with bookkeeper Esther Mullins, and decides to take her on a romantic date that ends with a poet’s murder. Assigned to the case, Rory pushes his private life aside. Things gets tricky after Esther is appointed Executrix for the estate—then rumors start that place a priceless item among the poet’s many possessions.
The race is on to unearth the treasure and solve the murder, but it leaves Rory wondering if Esther will live long enough to become his Valentine—or end up as the murderer’s next victim.
Author Interview
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a country girl who lives in the city. I’m allergic to drama and avoid noisy crowds and arguments. Most mornings, you can find me in the backyard enjoying the flowerbeds and a stout cup of coffee. Used bookstores and garage sales are my favorite weekend activities. Also, because I have a background in computer technology, I am called upon by friends for techie-computer advice—which is a laugh because things change so quickly in our world that any six-year-old knows as much as I know.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing for many years, although serious writing with the intent to publish happened when I retired from my full-time career in 2017. I started with short stories and had some luck. That success spurred me to try my hand at novel-length manuscripts. I love the longer pieces and the time it takes to develop a more powerful and more profound story.
Did you always want to be an author?
From a young age, I loved books and seldom was without at least one to read and a few waiting close at hand. Then, one day, after finishing a book by a favorite author, I thought, “I can write this well.” I had no idea where the idea would take me—or how hard it would be. Eight years later, I finally had a decent first manuscript. Admittedly, a mystery novel no longer takes that amount of time, sweat, or tears to complete.
How much research do you do before writing? Have you ever researched something and decided not to write about it?
For Gone Crazy, I did quite a bit of research on the Winnebago Indian Tribe. The more I read, the more impressed I was with the people, their beliefs, and the obstacles they overcame to become part of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Today, the Nation flourishes while preserving its native language, way of life, and lands. Rather than discovering something through research that I didn’t want to write about, I found more—and had to restrain myself from adding too much.
What genre of books do you prefer reading? What are you reading now?
Truthfully, I will read anything. However, I like to relax with a mystery. I love the puzzle and the chance to outwit the protagonist. I am reading Lost Birds: A Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito Novel by Anne Hillerman.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
My favorite place to write is definitely at home. When I moved two years ago, I gave up a 10’X10’ office/bedroom, my writing space. The new house has a roomy 30’x 15’ enclosed back porch. The room is almost weatherized, yet a little too hot in summer and definitely too cool in winter. I love the windows that dominate three walls and give an unrestricted view of the backyard and flower/lawn space. Spending time indoors never feels confining.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
My desk is pretty barren. My household currently includes three cats, and they are not considerate of my personal space, let alone my writing place. Papers often become their favorite sleeping pads. Neither are they respectful of the keyboard or mouse. Instead, there is a chase-and-tag game where they pursue the display cursor and drive me crazy! But on the walls and bookshelves, I keep favorite books, photographs of loved ones, and trinkets I’ve collected over the years.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
I spent many summers in the Midwest, enough time that rural small towns and barnyards remain dear to me. I write the Rory Naysmith Mysteries, which are set in northeastern Nebraska. Sign me up; I’d love to write while living in that area and schmoozing with the locals.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I belong to a critique group and three writing organizations. I treasure the time spent with these talented people because of their freely given support and continued encouragement. In addition, I find that being surrounded by the arts and artists, whether they are writers, singers, or kazoo players, is most satisfying.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I am working on the first book in a new series, Heads Up, Ruby Bleu, a historical cozy mystery set in 1951. Nineteen-year-old Ruby leaves the farm for a rented room in town and a job as a church secretary. She balances her way into a case of creative accounting that adds up to murder. Look for A Ruby Bleu Mystery in early 2025.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thank you for having me.
