Blue skies and wildflowers signal the start of summer in southern Vermont, and the Stonebridge Keep it Snappy Camera Club lenses are zoomed in on…murder.

It’s been more than a year since the sudden death of her husband, and photographer Bobbie Brooks wants nothing more than to escape her grief. Fleeing her life in the city, she seeks a fresh start in the serenity of the Green Mountains. But Bobbie’s new beginning comes to a halt when she finds a member of her camera club dead beneath the village’s idyllic covered bridge. Tragic accident or something sinister? With a keen photographer’s eye, Bobbie suspects murder.

As if transitioning to small-town life wasn’t challenging enough, Bobbie’s missing scarf is found at the murder scene, making her the primary focus. Scorned by local gossips, she enlists the help of her camera club and shifts her lens from photographer to amateur sleuth. Using photos found on the victim’s camera, they waste no time setting out to catch the killer—and discover no shortage of suspects. Secrets, lies, and blackmail…Danger abounds as they close in on the killer.
Her camera holds the answers… But can she develop the clues in time to stop the killer?

Thank you for inviting me to post on your blog today. And thank you, readers, for giving me a moment of your time! I had so much fun writing Caught on Camera, and I’m excited to share my story with you.

Have you ever been somewhere or done something that made you think, “I’d really like to read a story about this?” That’s what happened to me. Maybe I should start at the beginning.

Twelve years ago, my husband and I fell in love with Vermont. At the time, we both had full-time careers in the Boston area—and were thoroughly stressed out. Unable to leave our jobs behind, we bought ourselves a little getaway home we named “Away.” We couldn’t wait for Friday evenings when we’d escape the city and head straight for the Green Mountains. Inspired by the beautiful scenery, I bought myself a camera and started snapping photos of quaint villages, charming farms, trees, birds, snow… Anything, really.

I think of myself as a “photography enthusiast,” which basically means I have tons of enthusiasm despite my limited talent. But hey, I’m tenacious. I put my eye to the viewfinder and clicked away. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. Before I knew it, I’d met other hobby photographers online, joined photography groups and challenges, and I became part of a supportive community of amateur photographers. Then, one weekend, I walked into our village’s country store with my camera hanging from my neck, and a man approached me, curious to know what I was taking pictures of. He gave me suggestions for places to visit, and ended our conversation by saying, “You should start a photography club.”

And I thought, Not likely to happen, but wouldn’t that be a cool story?

Fast forward several years. I now live in Vermont full-time and don’t want to be anywhere else. I’m still inspired by the scenery that surrounds me. I still click my shutter button. And that cool story about a photography club—I wrote it. The photos included in this post were inspiration for my story. You may even recognize them from my book.

Caught on Camera is the story of Bobbie Brooks, a middle-aged widow who moves to Vermont, dreaming of a fresh start. Like me, Bobbie is a transplant from the Boston area. Also, like me, she is a photography enthusiast. That might be where our similarities end.

When the story opens, Bobbie is preparing for her camera club’s first photo shoot, but there’s a hint of trouble ahead. She leads her club to their chosen location—the village’s idyllic covered bridge—where she discovers a member of her club, dead. When Detective Cram trains his eye on her, she and her camera club spring into action, shifting their lenses to find the killer.

When I decided to write Caught on Camera, I knew southern Vermont would be the setting, and I knew my story would include a photography club. I pictured a strong female protagonist who was soft around the edges—one who was a little older that many of the popular female protagonists. I wanted her to be someone who had experienced hardship and heartache but was hopeful and caring—a character who was still trying to find her place in the world.

As an avid mystery reader, the mystery genre felt like a natural fit for me. There’s a puzzle to solve, one with enough twists and turns to keep most readers guessing (or so I’ve been told). The story is also about family, friendship, and home. With the beautiful Green Mountains as the backdrop, it’s the story of a heroine you’ll want to root for.

I’m currently working on the 2nd book in the Camera Club Mysteries. I’m excited about this story as well. Set in Vermont’s glorious autumn season, there’s another murder in the peaceful village of Stonebridge, Vermont. Once again, Bobbie and her camera club find themselves faced with finding another killer.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading Caught on Camera as much as I enjoyed writing it!
