Character Guest Post: Mia Reid, Archaeologist

Hello, I’m Mia Reid. I’m delighted to be here with you today.

I’d like to tell you a bit about myself, seeing as I’m new to your corner of the world.

First off, you need to know that I’m 38 years old and am an archaeologist. I love archaeology and all the aspects of the job. Well, most of the aspects. I’ve been working at Lakeview University and while I thoroughly enjoy teaching, the politics of academia are less than enjoyable.

My parents are archaeologists as well and when I was growing up, they took me with them on their digs. There’s a photo of me as a one-year-old, sitting in one of the squares on a dig in France. The au pair my parents hired is sitting next to me, watching as I dig around with my hands. I have a huge smile on my face.

By the time I started elementary school, I’d traveled around the globe with them. It was a lot of fun.

I lived with my maternal grandparents while I was attending school, and my parents away on a dig. When my parents returned, we’d all live together in my grandparents’ home in Lakeview. During summer breaks, my parents and I would go on a dig.

My career as an archaeologist was never a question. I knew that’s what I would be doing and my most difficult choice was which school I’d go to.

I met Ethan Carter at university in one of my first-year archaeology courses. We chummed together throughout our student careers and went on summer digs together as well. He enjoyed working with my parents. Before you think he was a love interest, so not the case. He was the brother I never had, and I was the sister he didn’t have. I introduced him to my roommate; Shelly, and they soon became joined at the hip. After university, they married. He and Shelly were there for me when the man I thought I’d marry broke my heart.

I’m meeting Ethan on the Isle of Skye in Scotland for a dig this summer. I’m looking forward to it.

We’ll be working on a broch just outside of Dunvegan. What’s a broch you ask? Well, it’s a circular stone structure that’s unique to Scotland. They date back to the Iron Age. Some are in good condition, some not. The one we’re working on has a side that’s open and the roof is gone, but it’s sturdy enough we can work on it. There are rumors in the area that Bonnie Prince Charlie may have stayed at the broch in 1745. And locals are wondering if there’s any truth to the idea that he may have left a treasure behind.

It’ll be interesting to see what we can dig up. (hahaha a little archaeological humor there!).

I’ve attached a photo of the broch that we’re working on.

Well, I’ve got to run. I need to get to the university and clean up my office before summer break. I have to attend a fundraiser at the museum tonight as well. And my flight leaves for Glasgow later this evening. Busy day ahead, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
