Excerpt from Misgivings

When Luke arrived at the police station, he caught sight of Dee immediately. She looked like a
small child, sitting on the bench all alone. The way her shoulders slumped and her head hung
low reminded him of all the times he had guiltily waited outside of the principal’s office. She
nervously toyed with the buckle on her purse. Luke hated to see her looking so dejected. She
used to walk with the air of an athlete, strong and confident, but as she sat there, she looked
broken and uncertain.

Dee looked up and caught Luke watching her. Standing up, she hooked her purse over
her shoulder. She walked over to Luke and stopped a few steps away from him. Hesitating, she
adjusted the weight of the purse on her shoulder. She looked like she wanted to say something
but couldn’t. Luke had never seen her look so lost or helpless before. Closing the gap, he put his
hand on her shoulder and asked, “Are you okay?”

Dee nodded, but her eyes filled with tears. Closing his arms around her, Luke drew her
in. Dee didn’t resist and he was surprised to find her nestling against him. Her stiff, rigid
demeanour collapsed into his chest. Sobbing, she cried, “I am so sorry.”

Lifting one hand to stroke her soft curls, he hushed her in an attempt to soothe her. “So
am I,” he whispered, causing her to sob even harder. He held her for a few more moments before
she finally straightened up. Pulling herself away, she madly wiped away at her tears. She felt
embarrassed for losing her composure, but felt better at the same time.
