When two of Cat Groomer Molly Stewart’s pet parents are framed for murder, Molly will stop at nothing to keep her octogenarian friends out of jail. The fact that the body was discovered between Florence and Lottie’s houses doesn’t bode well for the ladies, or the fact that their Sphynx cats were way too interested in pawing at the body when it was discovered. Although Molly is ready to pounce on the real killer, will she be able to help them, or has the ladies’ continual gossip and spying on others finally landed them in hot water?
My interview with Ruth J. Hartman
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, I’m Ruth J. Hartman and I live in rural Indiana with my husband and our very spoiled cats! Our house is over 150 years old, so lots of history here. We’ve lived here for over 35 years and always seem to find new things to fix around the house 😊
How long have you been writing?
I’ve always loved to write since I was little, but decided to write for publication in 2008.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
Even though I’ve always loved writing, I didn’t think about becoming an author until I wrote my first book, an autobiography about living with severe OCD. I decided to try writing my first mystery a few years ago after writing several romance books. Since I was reading a lot of mysteries, it made sense to try that genre.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading mysteries by a new-to-me author, Charlie Donlea. I love cozies, but also psychological thrillers and suspense.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
We have an enclosed porch on the back of our house. It overlooks our one-acre yard with lots of trees so I can see and hear the birds.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
I don’t use a desk much, but next to me on the recliner on our porch are a notebook, a journal with book info to remind me of characters from a previous story when I’m writing a series, and usually between 1-3 cats sleeping next to me, or bird watching.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
I loved reading the Bobbsey Twins books, and Nancy Drew. Also, I’ve always remembered the story, A Wrinkle in Time.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I go back and forth between ebooks and physical books. I’m not much of an audiobook listener, but several of my books are in audio and I love hearing from readers who like those.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
Probably Scotland. I have Scottish heritage from my grandmother, and have always wanted to go there.
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
I’ve loved reading mysteries since I was a teenager, when my mom shared her Mary Higgins Clark books with me. I’ve always admired the way she set up her stories, and the way I was surprised at the end of the story who the murderer was. Also, my parents have always been very supportive of my writing, and encouraged me to keep doing it.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I have a very good friend who I check in with nearly every day. We cheer each other on and read one another’s books for critiques. I also have a lot of writer friends, especially ones in my blogging group who are big supporters and help when I need information, help with a story problem, or just lift me up.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m working on Book 3 in my Mobile Pet Groomer Mysteries, Book 3 in my Seneca James Mysteries, and also Book 5 in my Kitty Beret Café Mysteries.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thanks so much for having me on your blog!
About Ruth J. Hartman
Ruth J. Hartman loves a good mystery. That’s probably why she happily gave up a life of cleaning other people’s teeth to write books. With several cozy mysteries under her belt, her main problem is keeping the characters straight – sometimes they have a tendency to hop on over to a different series, just for laughs
Over forty books later, consisting of romances, a children’s book, women’s fiction, and now cozy mysteries, Ruth still enjoys the thrill of taking the thoughts and images of her characters from her imagination to her computer screen.
She lives in rural Indiana with her husband, Garry, and their family of spoiled cats. Because of Ruth’s love for felines, every one of her books has at least one cat in it. Her cats, who’ve deemed themselves her editors, act like they’re supervising her writing, even though they’re often loafing off or napping.
