Ignoring Alva

by Emilie Khair

Ignoring Alva
Cozy Mystery/Sibling Fiction
Setting – Minnesota and Wisconsin
Publisher ‏ : ‎ Current Words Publishing (February 4, 2025)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 282 pages

Meet Alva and Millie…. not your typical eighty-something sisters.

While recovering from a mild stroke, Alva’s vivid dreams of daring exploits spark a restless desire to break free from the predictability of her quiet life. Her sister Millie-a practical yet spirited counterpart-is skeptical of Alva’s newfound boldness. But when Alva suggests an impulsive road trip, not even Millie can resist the call of adventure.

What starts as a lighthearted escapade quickly spirals into a whirlwind of mischief, suspense, and unexpected heroics. As the journey unfolds, the siblings face long-buried secrets, stand up for the underdog, and confront dangerous foes with a fierceness they never knew they possessed.

Through it all, Alva and Millie prove that courage, resilience, and the drive to rewrite your story aren’t confined by age-they’re only sharpened by experience.

Witty, heartfelt, and brimming with surprises, Ignoring Alva is an unforgettable tale of sisterhood and reinvention. It proves that life’s greatest adventures can happen when you least expect them.

My review of Ignoring Alva

I really enjoyed reading Ignoring Alva! I wasn’t sure about reading it until I read the excerpt which can be found on ignoringalva.com. It sounded like it would be an adventure, and it was!

Alva has had a mild stroke, and since then she has these flashes where she’s doing something odd…mostly things she wouldn’t do. She convinces her sister Millie, who at age 81 is a year and a half older than Alva, to go on a road trip. To not tell their kids. To just take off without a destination. And they do. They set off towards a “sort of” destination…Niagara Falls. Along the way, they meet a very eclectic bunch of people at a bunch of very eclectic places! To tell you about these people and places would ruin the fun for you! At their age, they really have no fear, and they end up taking down some really bad guys.

There are so many things that I loved about this book. The banter between the sisters reminded me of my 2 sisters and me. The characters that they encounter on their trip are so well-written that you’ll be able to “see” them and feel like you know them. The author has an extreme talent for describing settings too. I could picture everything so well, and that just made the book become more alive. I laughed so much as I read this! It’s just so entertaining!

I highly recommend Ignoring Alva to readers who enjoy quirky characters and a storyline that takes you places you’d never expect! Buckle up for a wild road trip with Alva and Millie! 5 stars!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

    Dear Christy,
I can’t thank you enough for your generous and thoughtful review of my book about two aging sisters—one propelled by post-stroke visions into an unexpected and transformative road-trip. It truly means the world to me that you took time to read it and share it with your audience.

I especially appreciate that you saw the humor in the story and connected to the dialogue. Those elements were important to me as I wrote it. I hoped the dialogue would bring to life the characters’ wit and warmth. Knowing they resonated with you is very rewarding.

Thank you again for shining a light on their story. Your support helps Ignoring Alva reach more readers who might need a little reminder that adventure (and laughter) can come at any age!

    Emilie
