Northern Virginia’s own Martha Stewart returns in a brand-new mystery as an interior designer clashes with a killer . . .
Stylish brunches are all the rage this autumn in Old Town Alexandria, and everyone’s posting their parties on social media. But while Domestic Diva Sophie Winston juggles her event-filled calendar, she’s approached by local designer Mitzi Lawson—who is afraid someone is following her. The very next day Mitzi loses her best friend and business partner, Denise. The two were renovating a generations-old house where Denise died unexpectedly, and Mitzi fears that it wasn’t a medical condition to blame, but murder.
It could just be the shock talking, but Sophie agrees to help Mitzi involve the police. Then she receives a panicked phone call from Mitzi, and when she rushes to the old house, Mitzi is nowhere to be found. Now Sophie’s appetite for investigation is piqued even more than her appetite for eggs Benedict and mimosas.
Could Denise’s death be connected to her viper’s nest of in-laws or the house she was working on which her husband just inherited? What of the self-proclaimed etiquette expert with some improper secrets, or the scheming mistress? Or does the old house harbor secrets of its own? There’s a generous buffet of suspects to keep the Diva scrambling for an answer . . .
Includes delicious recipes and fabulous DIY decorating tips!
Interview with Krista Davis
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I have written three series: the Domestic Diva Mysteries, the Paws & Claws Mysteries, and the Pen & Ink Mysteries. THE DIVA POACHES A BAD EGG will be my thirty-second book! I have two dogs and two cats, all rescues. Right now, I’m trying to train my newest dog. She’s a love but also a challenge!
How long have you been writing?
About thirty years! It scares me to say that. I feel like it was just yesterday that I sold my first book!
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
When I was a kid, I thought being an author would be the best! But then life sent me in other directions, which I think may have been a good thing because I met a lot of interesting people and encountered different situations. Eventually, I had a story in my head and thought I would give it a shot. A few years later, I sold a book and was off and running!
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
I read almost anything that’s a mystery. Not the gory ones, but I do enjoy suspense and thrillers. I never like to say what I’m reading now or name my favorite authors because I have so many author friends. If I didn’t name them all, someone would be insulted!
Do you have a favorite place to write?
I do most of my writing comfortably seated on a sofa with my legs up. But I edit on a big computer screen so I can see mistakes like ,.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
A mess! Notes about what I’m writing now, THE DIVA HOSTS A MURDERER. A large paper calendar. Notes about things I need to do. Mail. Pens. A notebook. Sticky notes. A mug of green tea.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
I know there were others, but FOUR LITTLE KITTENS is the one I remember. I still have it! And anything Nancy Drew!
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I read physical books and listen to audio books. Unfortunately, my eyes don’t like e-books. I do fine editing on a screen, but reading a book on a screen makes me dizzy!
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
Wow! Paris. Or the south of France. The Cotswolds? Pretty funny because I don’t speak French, but the food!!!
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
I can’t put my finger on one person, but collectively, all the wonderful authors who wrote the mysteries that fascinate me. I was also very lucky to attend schools with teachers who encouraged me in that direction. Even as a child I wrote plays that we put on in school. They were based on books and I don’t think they were very good, but the encouragement from teachers mattered.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I belong to Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America. I’m friends with some local authors, and I get a lot of support from a group of author friends: Ginger Bolton; Alison Brook; Laurie Cass; Peg Cochran; Kaye George; and Daryl Wood Gerber. We’re in touch about writing and everything else in our lives every single day. It’s so helpful, because things happen to authors that non-author friends don’t always understand.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m very excited about THE DIVA HOSTS A MURDERER. It’s the 4th of July, and Sophie Winston has a house full of family and guests. When a murder occurs, police quickly point fingers at Sophie’s father! She knows her kind father can’t possibly have killed anyone, so it’s up to her to find out who did!
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thank you for inviting me!
