Of Silver and Secrets (Time’s Lost Treasures Book #2)
by Michelle Griep
Buried underneath are truths bent on keeping them apart. . . .
In 1889 Victorian England, Eva Inman is haunted by guilt over her parents’ deaths while struggling to care for her blind sister and manage her family’s crumbling estate. With the tax deadline looming, Eva’s situation looks dire until an ancient silver ring is unearthed on the property. Despite superstitions warning against disturbing the supposedly cursed acres, Eva’s need for funds ignites her curiosity about the potential of finding more buried relics.
Cambridge professor Bram Webb must prove a legendary Christian Roman settlement exists, or he’ll risk exposing his uncle’s deteriorating memory and they’ll both lose their positions. Then Eva steps into his office with the prospect of an archaeological dig that might lead to the very evidence Bram requires–provided he and Eva can set aside painful memories of a time they would rather forget. As the dig forces the two to confront their pasts, the work becomes fraught with challenges that threaten Eva’s and Bram’s hopes, as well as the growing attraction between them.
My Review
I loved Of Silver and Secrets just as much as Of Gold and Shadows, the first book in the Time’s Lost Treasures series by Michelle Griep! Though it’s book two, you can absolutely read this as a standalone without missing anything. This Victorian era romance swept me away, and I just couldn’t put it down!
The characters and setting bring the story to life. For me, reading this was like watching it play out in real time! My heart just ached for the characters with their very real struggles. Eva had so much responsibility thrust on her as the sole caretaker of the Inman estate and for her blind sister, Penny. She struggled with guilt and her faith throughout much of the book, and it was very real. I think as Christians, most of us have gone through these same things. One quote that I loved from the book is this: “She would-she must-choose to believe God was not perpetually angry with her. That He had forgiven her for past mistakes, that there was grace for her in this nightmarish situation.” I felt this so deeply. I loved Bram, his uncle, Penny… I could go on and on about them, but it was Eva I felt the deepest connection to. Plus, you’ll discover your own love for them as you read!
I seriously loved everything about Of Silver and Secrets. The archeological dig was so intriguing as was learning more about this Roman Christian settlement in England. The author’s research brings life (and believability!) to the dig. There are some really tense moments and some twists that really stressed me out even though I knew there was going to be a happily ever after! I highly recommend this to all lovers of Christian historical fiction!
