Cozy Mystery

Special Agent Laci Duvall, AFOSI, thought it was supposed to be a lighthearted baseball game between the Air Force and Army Special Investigative Teams. But things took a deadly turn when the president of the local military spouse’s club was found dead in the women’s bathroom—stabbed with a plastic pink flamingo.

Now, Laci will work with the Army Criminal Investigative Division to find who hated the woman enough to leave her in a public restroom. Was it the spouse who ran against her for the presidency or a fellow club officer sick of her cruelty? The list of suspects increases by the minute, and Laci learns there is no loyalty when it comes to social climbing—military spouse’s style.

Character Guest Post: Laci Duvall

Tell you a little about myself. Oh wow, where do I start? I’m from Baltimore, Maryland, and recently returned for my job. Oh, I’m in the Air Force with the Office of Special Investigation. It’s like the FBI but in the Air Force. I described it to my roomie Cassy when I first met her as lots of paperwork followed by random bits of terror thrown in.

It’s too early for me to say what I will do when I get out of the Air Force. I’m not close to retirement yet, and I still really enjoy my job. The puzzle part of it is my favorite—figuring things out and solving the problems. I don’t so much enjoy the co-workers out to kill me or trying to take my job—that I could do without.

A day in my life would begin with me grabbing a sweet tea from the fridge or the local convenience store on my way into my office. You want more in-depth than that? I say hello to my cat, Boo, after I shut off my alarm—she sleeps at my head on her own pillow. Boo is short for Bailey—I don’t remember how it got to Boo though. I take a quick shower and get dressed, or I go and let my dog Needles outside to do his business, then come back and shower. Why Needles? Because I’m a huge Charles Schultz fan. After I’m dressed and have my tea in hand, I’m out the door.

My office is around where Golden Ring Mall used to be, and my boss is Colonel Waters. He’s great—I’ve known him for years. I even deployed with him once a long time ago. Where is Golden Ring? It’s between my house and Baltimore—that’s the best way I can explain it. I go right up Philadelphia Road, and after a few left turns, I’m there. Yes, I’m being vague on purpose. I think of Colonel Waters like a warm Earl Gray tea, easy on the sugar. Strong with a touch of sweetness.

Oh, the tea thing? Yes, it’s natural for me to size men up, and since I love all things tea, what better way to categorize them? From tea with lemon, like my ex-husband, to a busted tea bag, like one of the suspects in my latest case. I mean, I could practically feel the tea leaves crunching under my feet when I approached him. I never do it with women, though. Women are judged enough by themselves and others.

One of my most complicated cases would be my first one after moving back to Maryland. My ex-husband, Zach, who was a co-worker and fellow OSI agent, was killed, and it was up to me to find out who did it. But it’s how I met his wife, Sammie, and their twins, Ana and Ryan. Now we’re roomies with Cassy, who used to be a Baltimore City Police Officer but is getting ready to start law school. We all met, and they helped me solve the case within a week—we worked really well together.

We’re a family now, but if someone told me before I moved here I’d be living with my ex-husband’s wife and their kids, I’d have said you were crazy. Sammie’s parents live close by and help with the twins when she needs it, and her in-laws are also nearby. Cassy is from San Francisco, and her brothers are scattered all over the place. I learned with the military that family is what you make of it, and we are definitely a big family. We even fight like it—it’s great.

Oh, I should mention Rev, who recently joined our little tribe. We met him when I called his ride-share company, Revved, to pick us up off the shoulder of I-695 when my car broke down. He’s a retired preacher who loves meeting people and a tall six-foot-seven cold brewed drink of iced tea—no sugar needed. He has a lead foot, a colorful vocabulary, and a heart of gold.

I recently reconnected with my ex-boyfriend, Antonio, when I moved back to Maryland. I’ve known him since high school, which is right before I broke his heart to marry the dead idiot. He’s a detective with the Baltimore City Police. We tried to go on a date once, but it fell through. We’re both really busy, and it’s hard to find time on both our schedules. Yes, I know it’s not nice to speak ill of the dead, but you didn’t know Zach like I did either.

If there were one thing I would want people to know about myself, it would be to not sneak up on me. In terms of fight or flight, I am most definitely a fight. Just ask Sammie—she knows why.
